On Juneteenth, I reflect on my friend and martial arts brother, Grandmaster Fred Simon.

Fred lived through segregation, race riots, military service, and enormous change in America. Yet every story he shared with me carried the same message: courage, character, faith, and unity.

One story that stayed with me was when he first went to train in martial arts. He approached the back door because he believed he wasn't allowed through the front. His instructor, Grandmaster Pat Burleson, stopped him and told him to walk through the front door like everyone else. Then he made it clear that anyone who had a problem with that could leave.

That wasn't just martial arts.

That was leadership.

That was courage.

That was character.

Most people see a board break.

I see something much more important.

I see the confidence it took to try.
The focus it took to prepare.
The courage it took to commit.
And the growth that comes from pushing beyond what you thought was possible.

The board is just wood.

The lesson is legacy.

For more than 40 years, I have had the privilege of passing on lessons that were passed on to me by my instructors and mentors. Every class, every student, and every challenge is an opportunity to help someone become stronger than they were yesterday.

Skills fade. Trophies collect dust.

But confidence, discipline, character, and leadership can last a lifetime.

Keep building.

Keep growing.

Keep moving forward.

The lesson wasn't the kick.
When I was growing up in martial arts, I thought success was about learning more techniques.
Over time, I realized something different.
The kick is only the vehicle.
The real lesson is discipline.
The real lesson is perseverance.
The real lesson is learning to keep going when things get difficult.
A hook kick can take minutes to learn.
The character traits developed while mastering it can last a lifetime.
The older I get, the more I appreciate that martial arts was never really about fighting.
It was about becoming the kind of person who can face challenges, setbacks, and adversity without giving up.

A Legacy Isn't Built in a Day
Every achievement, every lesson, every setback, and every victory becomes part of the legacy we leave behind.
The greatest teachers I have known understood something important:
Knowledge is a gift when it is received.
Knowledge becomes a responsibility when it is shared.
Whether in martial arts, business, parenting, leadership, or life, our true impact is measured not by what we accomplish for ourselves, but by what we pass on to others.
The next generation is watching.
The next generation is learning.
The next generation is our legacy.
Keep growing.

Every technique has a story.

Tonight I was teaching Hook Kick in our Black Belt Training class, and it reminded me that martial arts is about so much more than kicks.

This technique wasn't created by me. It was passed down to me by instructors who invested their time, knowledge, and belief in my potential many years ago.

Now, decades later, I have the privilege of passing that same knowledge on to the next generation.

Skills fade. Trophies collect dust. But lessons, values, and wisdom passed from one generation to another can last forever.

Today I honor my brother, Richard Dietrich.
Known around the world as “The Black Belt Baby,” Richard became the youngest black belt in the world and helped pave the way for children in martial arts everywhere.
At just 8 years old, he spoke on Capitol Hill during the induction of Teacher Appreciation Day. He later served proudly in the United States Army and inspired countless people through courage, discipline, and leadership.
But beyond the recognition, medals, and headlines… his greatest joy in life was being a father.
We love you. We miss you. And your legacy lives on.

Today on Memorial Day, we honor my brother, Richard Dietrich.
Known around the world as “The Black Belt Baby,” Richard became the youngest black belt in the world and helped pave the way for children in martial arts everywhere.

At just 8 years old, he spoke on Capitol Hill during the induction of Teacher Appreciation Day. He was featured in The Washington Post, Newsweek, U.S. Magazine, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, Tonka Toys commercials, and more.

But beyond the recognition, Richard was a father, a soldier, a mentor, and a protector.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army and inspired countless lives through courage, discipline, leadership, and heart.

We love you, Richard. Forever our hero.
