Why do certified personal trainers need to obtain various certifications?

Different certifications cover various aspects of fitness, such as exercise science, nutrition, and specialized training techniques. This diverse knowledge allows trainers to create more effective and personalized fitness programs for clients, catering to their unique needs and goals.

As a certified Women’s Trainer and Coach my main focus is and will continue to be working with women through all phases of life to help them maintain the best quality of life. With that being said over a year ago Gavin, my 10 year old son, really got serious about his training as an ice hockey goalie. The more I worked with him the more it became apparent that the approach of training a young athlete is extremely unique for a variety of reasons.

This prompted me to work on a certification that would better equip me to give him what he needs. So now a year later I am pleased to announce that I have completed my Youth Fitness Trainer certification.

Something to think about…

We all lose bone as we age, and the long-term effects of this are osteoporosis and an increased risk of bone fracture. I’m often asked about how to maintain and improve bone health—so in a previous newsletter, I addressed this question, as well as providing some valuable resources for you.

The Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation reports that up to 50% of women and 25% of men aged 50+ will break a bone due to osteoporosis. It’s hugely important to build the best skeletons we can in the first 30 years of our lives and then try to maintain bone mass as we age. But how?

The buzz is all around Longevity in the wellness space, but let's have a moment to examine that phrase. When we talk about longevity, it’s easy to think only in terms of lifespan—how many years we live. But there’s another arguably more important concept to focus on: healthspan. Healthspan is about how well you live throughout those years. It’s your ability to stay active, sharp, mobile, and independent—without being sidelined by chronic illness, injury, or fatigue. Here are some global trends to consider:
1) Women generally live longer than men in nearly all countries and historical periods.
2) This difference is not unique to humans, as s*x differences in aging patterns are observed in many other species. Biological differences have been explored, but what about the sociocultural influences? Women are more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease, yet conversations tend to ignore the s*x and gender differences in education, occupation, caregivng burden, and socioeconomic status; all which tend to be lower than mens', and all which contribute to lower cognitive reserve. We need to keep looking holistically at the issues around healthspan; not just the top 1% of interventions of bro-science.

If you’re finding it harder to sleep, especially with the summer heat, you’re not alone. Women face unique sleep challenges—largely due to hormone fluctuations, different circadian rhythms, and even how we respond to temperature. But with the right strategies, you can improve your sleep, feel better, and perform at your best.

Women generally need—and get—a bit more sleep than men, according to research collated from both self-reports and wearable tracker data. But that doesn’t always mean better rest. Family and work responsibilities, as well as hormone fluctuations, often disrupt both the amount and quality of women’s sleep. Women also tend to go to bed earlier and are more likely to be morning types, likely due to biological differences in circadian rhythms.

Even though women often report more trouble falling and staying asleep, sleep lab studies show they typically have better sleep efficiency and more deep (slow-wave) sleep than men—benefits that hold up better with age. They also tend to enter REM sleep earlier in the night.

When it comes to sleep disorders, the differences are even more striking:
🥱 Insomnia is more common in women, starting in adolescence and continuing through life.
🥱 Restless legs syndrome occurs more often—and more severely—in women, especially during pregnancy and after menopause.
