If you were around War Memorial Stadium in the early sixties, you remember watching history get made in the mud. Cookie Gilchrist signed with the Bills in 1962 and immediately became the AFL's first 1,000 yard rusher, piling up 1,096 yards and a league record 13 touchdowns on his way to MVP. 🏈 He led the league in rushing again in 1964, helping Buffalo win its first AFL championship. Traded to Denver before the next season, he still made headlines by leading a boycott that pulled Black players out of a discriminatory 1965 All-Star host city, a moment remembered today as an early win for civil rights in pro football. Buffalo's toughest fullback never did things the easy way.
