🚣 In 1912, a handful of Buffalo oarsmen pulled together enough boats, borrowed from Columbia University and New York's Union Boat Club, to build a modest boathouse on Unity Island and enter their first regatta as the West Side Rowing Club. By 1918 it was the only rowing club left standing in Buffalo, and in 1921 it became the first club in the entire country to sponsor rowing for public high schools. 🏆

The club has weathered a lot since then, including a 1975 fire that destroyed its original wooden boathouse, rebuilding five years later without a dollar of government funding. When women's rowing became an Olympic sport in 1976, West Side grew its programs to welcome them, and today the club's rowers include more women than men. Their current home, the Fontana Boathouse, opened in 2007, its design adapted from Frank Lloyd Wright's own boathouse plans for the University of Wisconsin. 🛶
