If you train Jiu-Jitsu, you’ve probably tried to explain it to someone who doesn’t.
You tell them how much you enjoyed class. Then you mention that you spent most of it stuck underneath someone.
Understandably, they have questions. 😂
But you remember the escape you finally managed. The detail your partner helped you understand. The laugh you shared after the round.
Those small moments can be hard to explain to someone who only sees two people trying to choke each other.
This carousel is based on an article I wrote more than 10 years ago for a sports magazine. The assignment was to give people unfamiliar with Jiu-Jitsu 10 reasons to start training. Looking back, I still recognize those reasons in the people I teach today.
Jiu-Jitsu has been part of my life since I was 12. Competition gave me goals for many years, but after I stopped competing, I still had plenty of reasons to show up.
As a coach, I see people finding their own reasons. They don’t all want the same things from training, and they don’t need to.
If you have a friend who keeps inviting you, this carousel might help explain why.
And if you’re that friend: what brought you to your first class, and what keeps you coming back?
Send this to the person you’ve been trying to convince. Maybe they’ll finally join you. 🥋
