What is swimming? When we tell children they are swimming, what are they actually doing? Floating on a float, standing in the water, sitting on the step, bobbing in the water, dunking their head, jumping in with a floatation device….

Is that really swimming?

We are using this term too loosely and children are believing us.

Is it any wonder they are sneaking back to the water when we or their flotation devices aren’t with them when we have convinced them that they can “swim” when they really can’t?

What should we tell them instead?

“Look at you, playing in the water! Playing in water is fun but don’t go there alone. Always wait for mommy or daddy to go with you.”

“Mommy/Daddy is helping you stay up in the water because you haven’t learned how to do that alone yet.”

“We are going to go to swim lessons so you can learn how to swim and be safe.”

“You are doing a great job learning how to hold your breath when you go under water. This will help you when you learn to swim.”

Argo is gonna let your child become water competent. According to the American Red Cross water competency is when they can jump in water over their head, resurface tread water swim 25 yards and then float on their back.

According to a recent 2020 survey conducted by the American Red Cross, over half (56%) of kids ages 4-17 cannot perform the basic water safety skills they need to save their own lives.

Are your kids part of that 56%?

Give a child magic and confidence and they can achieve anything in the water. This is my little 2 year- turned 3 this summer during lessons, she wanted to be a mermaid too- she was a wonderful mermaid!

I loved the pool as a child. I love the pool now. In the first ARC WSI certification course I took it started with a women diving into the water and swimming laps. Aside from all the benefits of lap swimming the minds freedom of the pool, and the calmness of the absence of sound while you float or glide through the water is a feeling like no other.
If you child has any of these issues and struggles in life or at school the pool or swim lessons maybe a place they find comfort and peace. 💦💞🫧
