Soon, the great steam locomotives of the B&O Railroad replaced the tranquil transit of canal boats, and a boomtown was born. Today, Brunswick serves as a hub of the MARC rail system, carrying passengers into DC's Union Station. Brunswick High School Replacement Community Meeting

Location: Brunswick Elementary School Cafeteria
Date/time: Thursday September 17, 6-7:30 p.m.

Brunswick High School Replacement details: This project will replace the 61-year-old Brunswick High School with a modern facility on the existing campus. The new school will feature updated and modernized classroom and Career and Technical Education (CTE) wings, a cafeteria, an auditorium, a main gymnasium, and an auxiliary gym. Additionally, sports facilities impacted by construction will be fully upgraded or restored.

Meeting Details: FCPS staff and the Architect/Engineering/Construction Management team will provide information on:
• The project development process, including site assessment and schematic design
• Site design and access
• Pedestrian and vehicular safety considerations
• Construction phasing
• Related planning activities and coordination opportunities

It is with profound sadness that we share the unexpected passing of former City of Brunswick Mayor Jeffrey Snoots. A native of Brunswick, Mayor Snoots served from 2016-2020. Prior to that, he had been elected as a Council Member in 1987, and again from 2012-2016.

During Mayor Snoot’s time in office, he was a catalyst for large projects such as renovations to the Sports Complex on 13th Avenue, planning and beginning the new City operations building at 811 West Potomac Street, upgrading the Yourtee Springs facility in southern Washington County, and advocating for the replacement of Brunswick High School, among countless other acts.

Mayor Snoots was a friend to all and a well-liked leader among those of us who work for the City. He sought out other long-term elected officials and staff members for guidance. He wasn’t afraid to make a decision after considering all options, but he also knew when to step aside and let others work. Mayor Snoots lead the City through the COVID pandemic including an unprecedented operations shut-down and emergency preparations and response. He ran the City with common sense and approachability.

Current Mayor Nathan Brown says, “I considered Jeff a mentor and close friend, and he will be deeply missed.” That sentiment is shared by those of us who had the pleasure of serving under Mayor Snoots.

We offer up our deepest condolences to Jeff’s devoted mother, also known as the “First Mother of Brunswick,” and his other family members.

Black drapes have been placed on City Hall to pay reverence to Jeff’s passing.

City of Brunswick Announces Process to Fill Current Council Member Vacancy

Brunswick, MD— The City of Brunswick announces the process to fill a current vacancy on the Council. The term for this seat runs through August 2030.

In accordance with Section 513 of the Brunswick City Charter, the Council will seek to appoint a qualified individual to fill the vacancy. The Charter states: “In case of a vacancy on the Council for any reason, by unanimous vote the Council shall elect a qualified person to fill the vacancy for the unexpired term. Should a unanimous decision not be reached, a special election shall be held in accordance with this Charter and any ordinances governing the special election process.”

Timeline and Process for Filling the Vacancy:

• August 31, 2026 – Candidate submission packets will be made available for download at www.brunswickmd.gov/mayorandcouncil, by emailing [email protected], or picked up at City Hall – 1 West Potomac Street, Brunswick, MD. Completed packets must include a letter of interest, professional resume, nominations affidavit, petition of signatures, and Ethics Financial Disclosure.

• September 28, 2026, 4:30pm – Deadline for packet submission by interested candidates.

• October 5, 2026, 6:00pm – In-person candidate interviews will be held in a public Mayor and Council session. Candidates will be interviewed in random order in the Council chamber at City Hall. Council Members will ask pre-determined questions and candidates will have two minutes to respond to each question. Candidates will be sequestered downstairs at City Hall without electronic devices while awaiting their interview but may choose to join the audience in the Council chamber after their interview has concluded. While the public is welcome to attend the interview session, there will be no public participation throughout the evening. This session will also be recorded and broadcast through the City’s website and Comcast Ch.99.

• October 13, 2026, 6:00pm – Tentative appointment of new Council Member and oath of office.
The Mayor and Council will hold a series of closed sessions during this process to vet and discuss candidates, but the Council vote, appointment, and oath of office administered by the Mayor will take place in public session.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the process.
