The Five Birds Ranch and Hunting Lodge

The Five Birds Ranch and Hunting Lodge Est. in 2025

The Birdwell family legacy in West Texas spans four generations, rooted in the rugged landscapes of cattle and cotton farming.

They were pioneers of the plains, raising cattle under vast skies and coaxing cotton from the stubborn soil. Their grit and ingenuity laid the foundation for a family tradition of hard work, stewardship, and deep connection to the land.

The second generation navigated the challenges of droughts, market swings, and the ever-changing demands of ranching life. By the third generation, the Birdwell’

s had become respected figures in the West Texas ranching community. They embraced innovative techniques, blending time-honored methods with new approaches to improve soil health and grazing efficiency.

Today, the fourth generation, led by Trey and CC Birdwell, has transformed this rich heritage into something extraordinary: Five Birds Ranch and Hunting Lodge. Located in the heart of Brownwood Texas, Five Birds Ranch is more than a ranch—it’s a destination where the family’s passion for the land meets a vision for hospitality and conservation. From guided hunts for native game to immersive stays in the lodge, Five Birds reflects the Birdwell’ commitment to preserving the land while sharing its wonders with others. At Five Birds Ranch and Hunting Lodge, we honor the legacy of those first cattle drives and cotton harvests. Whether you’re here to hunt, to reconnect with nature, or to experience the warmth of our family’s hospitality, we invite you to become part of our story.

SCREWWORMS: WHAT DOG OWNERS SHOULD KNOW 🐾

There has been a lot of discussion recently about screwworms, and we wanted to share a few facts every dog owner should know.

Despite the name, screwworms are not actually worms. They are the larval stage of the New World Screwworm Fly.

What makes them concerning is that they can infest wounds, hot spots, ear injuries, surgical sites, and other openings, feeding on living tissue and causing a wound to worsen quickly.

The biggest takeaway?

Check your dogs.

Take a few minutes each day to look over:

🐾 Wounds and cuts

🐾 Hot spots

🐾 Ear injuries

🐾 Surgical sites

🐾 Areas your dog is excessively licking or chewing

One statement that stood out to us while researching this topic:

“A hotspot may not be just a hotspot.”

We’ve also noticed that many of the photos being shared online don’t all look exactly alike. Some larvae may appear cream, gray, tan, or even pinkish in color. Rather than focusing on identifying the exact color, focus on the condition of the wound and whether something looks abnormal.

A small wound can become a big problem quickly if it goes unnoticed.

Make head-to-tail checks part of your regular routine. 🐾
