As the NFL Draft comes to Pittsburgh, Fayette County has a story worth telling โ€” and it starts with one of its own.

Back home, he was Bruiser. Early in his NFL career, he was Will James Peterson. In time, football fans came to know him as William James โ€” the name many know him by today.

Before the 10-year NFL career, before the Sundays on the big stage, Will James was a Brownsville kid carrying hometown pride with him everywhere he went.

He starred at Michigan, where he started as a true freshman on a national championship team. He was selected in the third round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the New York Giants.

Then came a moment that said everything about who he was. As a rookie, he started the very first game of the season for New York on Monday Night Football at Mile High Stadium, the day before 9/11. Asked what college he went to, he gave an answer people in Fayette County will never forget:

Brownsville.

He went on to build a 10-year NFL career, one of the most notable in modern Fayette County history.

And yet, what makes his story truly stand apart is what came after football.

Will James came home.

He did not just leave Fayette County with success. He brought success back with him. He returned to invest in local young people, create opportunity, and build pathways that did not exist before.

Through Team Humanity, Verticals Makerspace and Entrepreneurship Center, and the Verticals Mobile STEM Lab, he has poured into this community in a way that is rare, personal, and lasting.

Others may have moved on. Will came back.
Others may have inspired from a distance. Will showed up in person.
Others may have had football careers. Will turned his into a mission.

That is why his story still resonates.

Not only because he made it to the NFL. But because he never stopped being from Brownsville. Never stopped being from Fayette County. And never stopped giving back to the people and places that shaped him.

From Brownsville to the NFL stage โ€” and back home again โ€” Will Jamesโ€™ story is about more than football. It is about pride, purpose, and giving back.

Verticals is building a Mobile STEM Lab designed to bring hands-on future skills directly to youth across our region. ๐Ÿšโš™๏ธ

This is about access.

Filling carts for community pantries. Rival athletes joined forces for the Grocery Dash benefiting Monessen.

Huge thanks to Monessen Foodland and our contestants who filled carts for their constituents: SPHS Monessen Family Center, Little Things for Little People, Gate of Heaven COGIC, Orchard Christian Fellowship.

Athlete Runners: ๐Ÿˆ Anthony DiCenzo (Belle Vernon), ๐ŸฅŽ Ava Clark (Brownsville), and Monessenโ€™s ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ€ Torrence (TJ) Taylor, Tayvian Cragette, Jakob Dellโ€”putting rivalries aside for something bigger.

We had an amazing morning. The kids even got to join in and give back. Much love to all who made this possible โค๏ธ

The Best part of yesterdays Good Neighbor GROCERY DASH

Picking our Ultimate Good Neighbor Winner ๐Ÿ† โ€”and reading what neighbors wrote about neighbors throughout the week. The everyday stuff that usually goes unseen but changes a day (sometimes a life): rides, meals, check-ins, showing up.

Roll Call: Alan Roberts โ€ข Audrey Exum โ€ข Billie Szabo โ€ข Jakob Dell โ€ข Jocelyn Mascola โ€ข Mya Kelly โ€ข Michael โ€œMikeyโ€ Towler โ€ข Samone Stepoli โ€ข Victoria Lynn โ€” winners in our eyes.

In true Good Neighbor fashion, Mya Kelly took her $500 Refrigerator FULL certificate and split it in half with someone she knew needed it. Thatโ€™s the heart of love your neighbor as yourself!

Thanks for reminding us who we are. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ’š TEAM HUMANITY GOOD NEIGHBOR GROCERY DASH โ€” RECAP

Monessen showed up BIG today.

Four local teams โ€” SPHS Monessen Family Center, Little Things for Little People, Gate of Heaven COGIC, and Orchard Christian Fellowship โ€” sprinted a 3-minute Grocery Dash and filled carts that go right back to the people they serve. This is what community looks like.

Huge thanks to Brandon and the entire Monessen Foodland crew for opening the aisles and cheering us on, and to all the Team Humanity volunteers who made it smooth from start to finish.

Student-athlete runners:๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ Anthony DiCenzo (Belle Vernon)๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ Ava Clark (Brownsville)๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ Torrence (TJ) Taylor, Tayvian Cragette, Jakob Dell (Monessen) HS athletes who ran hard for their neighbors โ€” weโ€™re proud of you!

We also pulled the winner for the Good Neighbor Refrigerator FULL of Groceries ($500 certificate for Refrigerator Full ) โ€” Mya Kelly is the winner๐Ÿ†

Thank you, teams, runners, staff, and everyone who nominated a neighbor. More post to come about the event! โค๏ธ
