As the NFL Draft comes to Pittsburgh, Fayette County has a story worth telling โ and it starts with one of its own.
Back home, he was Bruiser. Early in his NFL career, he was Will James Peterson. In time, football fans came to know him as William James โ the name many know him by today.
Before the 10-year NFL career, before the Sundays on the big stage, Will James was a Brownsville kid carrying hometown pride with him everywhere he went.
He starred at Michigan, where he started as a true freshman on a national championship team. He was selected in the third round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the New York Giants.
Then came a moment that said everything about who he was. As a rookie, he started the very first game of the season for New York on Monday Night Football at Mile High Stadium, the day before 9/11. Asked what college he went to, he gave an answer people in Fayette County will never forget:
Brownsville.
He went on to build a 10-year NFL career, one of the most notable in modern Fayette County history.
And yet, what makes his story truly stand apart is what came after football.
Will James came home.
He did not just leave Fayette County with success. He brought success back with him. He returned to invest in local young people, create opportunity, and build pathways that did not exist before.
Through Team Humanity, Verticals Makerspace and Entrepreneurship Center, and the Verticals Mobile STEM Lab, he has poured into this community in a way that is rare, personal, and lasting.
Others may have moved on. Will came back.
Others may have inspired from a distance. Will showed up in person.
Others may have had football careers. Will turned his into a mission.
That is why his story still resonates.
Not only because he made it to the NFL. But because he never stopped being from Brownsville. Never stopped being from Fayette County. And never stopped giving back to the people and places that shaped him.
From Brownsville to the NFL stage โ and back home again โ Will Jamesโ story is about more than football. It is about pride, purpose, and giving back.
