Washington state Governor Jay Inslee signed a bill the week of May 7 that helps support the effort to create and install the statue of Nisqually activist and statesman Billy Frank Jr. in Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C. With Willie Frank III in Washington, D.C. advocating for salmon just as his father did, relatives Hanford McCloud, Nisqually governmental liaison and weaver and Nisqually 7th Council Leighanna Scott witnessed the signing. Additionally, Arts Washington representative Michael Sweney, the agency helping facilitate the project, and McCloud's son, Aiden and friends witnessed the moment.
The legislation enabling the project was signed by Inslee at Nisqually in 2021. Haiying Wu, the first Chinese - American to have a statue in Statuary Hall, is the artist and the project is tentatively planned for installation in early 2025.

Representatives from the Nisqually Indian Tribe, Squaxin Island Tribe and Puyallup Tribe of Indians gathered Friday to plant a seedling on the Nisqually reservation.

The seedling is descended from the "Treaty Tree," which for more than a century stood at the spot where tribal representatives signed the Treaty of Medicine Creek in 1854.

"This is monumental ... something that's embedded in each and every one of us," said Puyallup Tribal Council member Fred Dillon.

Nisqually Tribal Council member Antonette Squally (right), who helped organize the gathering, said the tribal council, Washington State Historical Society and Holly Tree Farms helped the tribe acquire the seedlings—a key link to the past and symbol of the tribe's continued dedication to treaty rights.

Seedlings were given to the Puyallup and Squaxin Island tribes to plant, and another will be given to the Muckleshoot Tribe, which also reserves rights under the Treaty of Medicine Creek.

About

Indigenous Life Coaching & Consulting grew out of my passion for community-centered planning and finding ways to empower positive transformation for individuals and organizations interested in supporting future generations through taking care of our individual and collective selves by caring for the environment and our physical bodies. Relationship building and trust are my key priorities and something that I practice daily. Other core beliefs and ideas that ground my work is that we are all legacy driven and life long learners who practice care, forward action and with proper reflection on our past.

I work with people who have an intense passion for success for themselves, communities and businesses. We identify an issue, situation or goal (big & complex or minor & simple). By the end of the session, we have a list of achievable steps laid out in front of us. In between, sessions we transition from ideas into action and creation. My focus areas and experience are: post-secondary education, diversity, equity and inclusion, environment and sustainability, health and wellness. My strengths are assisting you with refining your craft and developing your plans for your business, education, health and wellness.
