Thank you to all of these cowboys and cowgirls for stopping by the barn today. Good job 🤠
If you missed us, don’t worry — we’ll be available Monday, just send us a DM.
This event is about more than competition. It’s about honoring the life and legacy of Payton Lane William Weatherwax Buckland — “MIO ‘OHKITOPI — RIDES HARD.”
Payton was an inspiration not only to all of us at Hell’s Half Acre, but to everyone who knew him. Diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive skeletal cancer, Payton faced every battle with unwavering courage, faith, and strength beyond his years. His doctors were amazed by his bravery and positive outlook through every stage of treatment.
Payton would tell his mother, Andrea, that when he was done with treatment, he was going to ride a bull. He practiced his bull-riding form at the edge of his hospital bed and proudly told the doctors he was going to ride a bull.
In the summer of 2021, Payton attended Sundance on Blackfeet land in Browning, Montana. He said he felt uplifted, surrounded by spirits and strength, renewed with the energy to continue chemotherapy.
When they returned in 2022, Payton earned his Indian name, “MIO ‘OHKITOPI — RIDES HARD,” given by Blackfeet Elder Donald “Donnie” Fish. The spirits saw Payton as a warrior riding hard toward his enemy — cancer. The name fit him perfectly: brave, fearless, and ready for battle.
Payton’s heart was pure, his love unconditional, and his courage gave hope to everyone around him. He is a legend in his time, an Indian Cowboy whose story continues to inspire us all.
