Did You Know?

The legendary 1911 pistol was designed by John Moses Browning more than a century ago. After a series of demanding military trials, Browning’s design was officially adopted by the U.S. Army on March 29, 1911. Its power, reliability and remarkably durable design helped make it one of the most recognizable handguns in history.

But here is a little-known chapter in the 1911’s story: During World War II, the Singer Sewing Machine Company produced a small batch of just 500 Model 1911A1 pistols for the U.S. military. Singer was originally contracted to study how quickly the pistols could be manufactured, but the company’s precision equipment was soon redirected toward making more urgently needed military components.

Because so few Singer 1911s were produced, authentic examples are now among the rarest and most valuable military 1911s in existence. Not bad for a legendary pistol made by a company best known for sewing machines!
