ATTENTION POST PLAYERS!! 🏀
You wanna dominate in the post? This post is long but here are 10 tips to help you get there:
⚒ Be able to finish with both hands - Don’t limit yourself to scoring by 50%. If you can only score with a preferred hand, you become easier to defend.
⚒ Always know your distance to the hoop - Your distance to the basket on the catch will determine the post move you do….quick moves in low post and face up moves in mid post.
⚒ Figure out your opponents game plan early - Are they playing behind? Are the fronting? Are they forcing you left or right? Are they giving you space to face up? Are they playing physical? You have to be able to adjust to have long game success.
⚒ Make the jump hook a go-to post move - Sometimes it’s as simple as catch, turn and score. It’s quick, hard to defend and many post moves can be finished with a jump hook.
⚒ Master your footwork - All elite post players have mastered their footwork. You beat your defender with your feet. You want to confuse your defender? Become an expert with your footwork.
⚒ Be able to pass out of the post - Your first look should be to score, but if double teamed you have to be able to pass. GET ASSISTS!
⚒ Slow down - Rushing your moves can lead to poor decisions. If the defender is in position, take time to assess the situation. Being patient will lead to better decision making and increased scoring.
⚒ Work for good position early and hold it - Know who is guarding you and the position you score best from.
⚒ Perfect your go-to post moves with counters- By knowing which post moves you like allows you to put yourself in the best position. Get the reps in by practicing your favorite moves and then add counters.
⚒ Embrace the contact - The post position is very physical. The best post players learn to love it and play to attack their defender, get their opponent in foul trouble and end up on the free throw line.
