On this day 170 years ago, Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson patented the Volcanic Repeater.

Using an improved version of the Smith-Jennings patent, Horace Smith & Daniel Wesson set out to make the first commercially viable repeating firearm. February 14, 1854 marked that day. The Volcanic Repeater laid the groundwork for subsequent developments in the late 1800s, giving rise to two highly successful fi****ms companies.
