Another incredible paddle on the Chassahowitzka River in Florida. Call or text 352.293.6626 or FB message to take a 3 hour kayak trip on the river to see Wood Ducks like this. These ducks typically choose a nesting tree 1 foot to 2 feet in diameter, with a cavity anywhere from 2–60 feet high (higher sites seem to be preferred). These cavities are typically places where a branch has broken off and the tree's heartwood has subsequently rotted. The nest tree is normally situated near to or over water, though Wood Ducks will use cavities up to 1.2 miles from water.
The Chassahowitzka is a wildlife refuge and has otters, manatees, Bald Eagles, a variety of herons, and more!

My favorite shot of the day. It was after sunset when I got this. I had a late start, so relished my escape to the river. This Great Blue Heron had had enough of being the center of my attention, so launched to find a new perch for the night. I love how his wing tip touches his reflection in the river (Chassahowitzka River, FL).
The Great Blue Heron is the largest of the North American herons with long legs and neck, with a wide black stripe over the eye, and a thick, dagger-like bill. Head, chest, and wing plumes give a shaggy appearance. In flight, the Great Blue Heron curls its neck into a tight “S” shape; its wings are broad and rounded and its legs trail well beyond the tail.
I finished my paddle being surrounded by Manatees, with one slapping the water with his impressive tail within a foot of my kayak seat! Not a breath of wind and the water was as smooth as glass.

Florida's mullet fish are one of the state's most ecologically and culturally important fish. Nearly every predator that anglers target in this state feeds on them, and adults help keep the bottom and water clean by feeding on decaying leaves and algae.
The real mystery is why mullet seem to jump for joy or sport. There are only theories. It's possible that mullet jump to shake off clinging parasites. It's possible that Florida mullet fish jump during the spawning season to break open their egg sacks, in preparation for the spawn. But Dr. Grant Gilmore, a renowned marine biologist from Vero Beach, has another interesting idea.
Gilmore is fascinated by the sounds that fish and other marine organisms make, and he studies them using underwater microphones. Because they most often swim in dark or off-color water, he wonders if Florida mullet fish jump for the sake of letting others in the school know where they are. Interesting . . .

Anhinga. He has web feet, great for swimming for fish. He also does not have any nostrils! It breathes entirely through the mouth.
The Anhinga swims lower in the water than many other birds due to its reduced buoyancy-a result of wetted plumage and dense bones. When at the surface, it tends to swim low in the water, often with only the neck and head above the water, and sometimes with only the bill exposed, resulting in it mistakenly looking like a snake.
