Leading 6 classes a week and broadening my scope to Pilates and Yoga has completely transformed my style of teaching. I remember talking to my yoga teacher in India and he kind of laughed at me when I said I'd always plan my workouts out ahead of time. He said "I've never done that!" He was a very intuitive, go with the moment and flow kind of teacher. I will say however, that I've found yoga feels more condudive to this type of teaching. Because I practiced consistently since yoga school, when I went into Down Dog Yoga Center (my first yoga gym now!) I realized I didn't need to plan the sequence out. It felt ingrained. Amazingly, now that I'm teaching my sculpt class again (a class I taught for over a year 6 times a week in my Brooklyn gym), that the vibe of fluid teaching has seeped in. Although I salt and pepper new moves into any given routine, and I do have my book open if I ever "blank out," I rarely look to the book or plan my workouts now. I sequence the workout in a manner that feeds off the energy of the room. I'll be real - I'm f*% excited about this. Not only because it saves time, actually that's the least part I'm excited about... it just feels BETTER, more natural, and I think reading the clients and class goers is #1 when it comes to being a good teacher. I've leveled up. And growth feels really great. That's all. In general, as with anything in life, the power, growth and maturity resides in listening closely to intuition.
