Dou Yoga

Dou Yoga Neighborhood yoga studio in Brooklyn Dou Yoga’s mission is to create a welcoming space for everyone. The meaning of Dou 道 is “way” in Japanese, the way of yoga.

We feel that yoga is an essential part of creating a healthy and happy community. The idea of Dou is to welcome those in the neighborhood to develop their practice, understand their mind and body and bring its benefits to everyday living.

What most people don't realize about a yoga teacher training is that it is so much more than learning just about yoga or about the poses.

1. Communication. Learning to stand in front of people and express your thoughts, share ideas as well as guide them through various postures isn't something that we are all naturally good at. But it is something that we can work on and improve.

2. Confidence. If you were anything like me standing in front of a room full of people and speaking was a terrifying thought. After going through training that has slowly faded over the years. You start to trust your own voice and learn to stand firmly and hold space.

3. Awareness. We learn to observe, reflect, and start to have a dialogue with our body, our mind, our relationships, our day-to-day actions and decisions. All of this can be done without much thought or with more awareness. We can bring a greater intention to our daily life.

There are plenty of trainings out there, but am biased and think that the 200-hour Dou Yoga training is pretty stellar. less

Dear Wonderful Community,

Reflecting back on the past 15 years, I come back to the meaning of Dou. In Japanese, it’s literally translated as “street” or “path,” but it can also mean “a way”—as in karate-dō, judo, aikidō, and even Korean taekwondo.
It also appears in the Daoist symbol of yin and yang—the Dao. Here, it can mean and symbolize wholeness and the unification of duality. Or more simply: harmony and balance.

What’s interesting about a path or a way of getting somewhere is that it changes. The roads and streets we rely on every day may seem stable and consistent, but they’re always evolving. We’re the same way. Even when we believe we’re the same person year to year—day to day—we’re continually changing and growing. So, too, is yoga: our practice, our relationship to it, and our understanding of it.

So rather than fixate on one way—or the way—I believe it’s important that we follow your way. Your personal path back to balance, harmony, and potentially to your most authentic self. To do that, you have to participate. You have to experience.

When I look at the studio and what this all means, my intention has been the same from the very beginning: that the teachings and benefits of yoga aren’t only intellectual, and they aren’t limited to what we experience on our mats. Each of us can experiment with this practice and apply it. Because it’s a path, it’s also about the process and the experience along the way. It’s not about a single goal, a specific destination, or a predetermined agenda. Where we’re going, why we’re going, and how we get there can vary greatly.
At Dou, we’re here to facilitate your journey—to help guide you along the path.

It’s been a fascinating journey, filled with many twists and turns over these 15 years. There have been challenging and difficult moments. But what I cherish most are the moments of beauty, love, and community the studio has offered.
Who knows what the future will bring? I know I’ll keep walking this path—and I hope you’ll walk along with me.
