GT Motorsports (GTMS)

GT Motorsports (GTMS) Georgia Tech's Internal Combustion Formula SAE Team The team designs and builds a single-seat formula car following the rules set by SAE.

At the competition, team members are judged on their communication and technical knowledge through the marketing presentation and engineering design display. Then, the car is judged on its performance in various driving events, including acceleration, lateral acceleration, maneuverability, fuel economy, and endurance. All driving is done by team members; usually six members of the team drive the c

ar in various events at competitions. The team is responsible for every aspect of the car, from the engineering, to the body work, to the ergonomics. Aside from the fun that results from building the car and working with a group of people, the students gain hands-on experience in working with such computational design tools as AUTO-CAD and SDRC-I IDEAS, and fabrication experience with TIG welders and machine tools. They finely hone their technical experience when working with engine dynamometers to measure horsepower; they also learn testing procedures and organizational skills.

The team has continued to work over the summer to make progress of F25 manufacturing and F26 design. Big accomplishments so far have included welding all tabs, powder coating the chassis, manufacturing molds, laying up several carbon fiber parts, and completing all PDRs. Still another month till the Fall semester where pace will really pick up!

FSAE Michigan 2024...what a comp. Things didn’t pan out the way we wanted them to, but the team still took a lot of positives away and are already in full swing of manufacturing F25.

During static tech, several issues were encountered such as an impact attenuator that was 4mm too high and a plenum that was too long. After replacing the impact attenuator and replacing the plenum, we were able to fly through all the dynamic tech items on our first try (big win for the team compared to last year’s sound incident).

For the dynamic events, things started off fairly strong with skidpad; however, on our second skidpad attempt our engine unfortunately suffered a failure. has a sad but beautiful video of it happening in real time.

Even with a blown up engine, the team still persevered and pulled an all nighter in an attempt to complete a full engine swap with a stock engine. Unfortunately, when the new engine was all hooked up car 7 didn’t want to fire up.

With all of that said, there were still many wins for the team. For the static and dynamic events we completed, we performed better in all of them compared to last year. Some of the highlights were 1st in the Business Presentation, major improvement in cost, and a top-10 3 view drawing.

A massive thank you to the members of our team who put in countless hours, our sponsors for supporting us this year, and Georgia Tech for allowing us to pursue our passion.

We’ll be back stronger next year.
