I’m grateful for winter walks on sunny days, and for being lucky enough to come home to warmth. A bath. A bed. A place to land.

That gratitude doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It lives right alongside an awareness of the people who don’t have those things. Who are choosing between heat and food. Who don’t have reliable shelter at all.

I can feel thankful for what I have without pretending it’s effortless, and without closing my eyes to the suffering happening at the same time.

Both are true.

Spend time with older people.
They have perspective.
They know the truth: that your pain is real and your life is long, and you will grow into it.

When I met my mother-in-law Seena 15 years ago, she was just getting used to being hard of hearing. It infuriated her (which I completely understood). Now she reads lips like a pro, asks me to face her when I talk, and her hearing aids are connected to Bluetooth. She hears you clearly on the phone.

She’s had health scares. Every time, she rallies. Not without complaints or fear, but with a fierce devotion to the idea of “just one more day.”
And honestly? That might be one of life’s greatest lessons.

When we arrived on Friday, she was a little low. By the end of dinner, she was energized again.

There is still growth ahead.
We never stop doing it.

Seena has taught me that. 💛
