After decades of leadership, countless wrestlers, and a lifetime of investment in Columbia Central Wrestling and students, Coach Guernsey has decided that it is time to step away from the head coaching position. While this marks the end of an incredible chapter, it does not mark the end of what he built.
From Coach:
I’ve come to a point where I have say, “I’m done.” Coaching at Columbia Central has been one of the greatest honors of my life, but a good coach has to recognize when it’s time to get out of the way. I will still be around, possibly a Coach Emeritus; but it is increasingly clear to me that I lack the energy necessary to really lead a K-12 wrestling program. The current coaches in the program are more than capable of moving this program forward to greatness. Six years ago I volunteered to come back and coach for the very end of the season. The talent I saw in the program, both in athletes and potential coaches, convinced me to continue. I’m incredibly proud of what Columbia Central Wrestling has accomplished. It was the work of boosters, parents, athletes, and many many coaches at every level that have us where we are today. Believe me when I say, I am no longer necessary in this program. I loved it, I will miss it, but there’s a reason you don’t see many 70 year old coaches.
On the bright side, Mrs. Guernsey won’t have to do all the Christmas shopping by herself this year.
