DNA extracted from a horse tooth found at the 16th-century Spanish settlement of Puerto Real has revealed a remarkable link to the wild horses of Assateague Island. Genetic analysis shows the colonial animal’s closest living relatives are the feral herds roaming this Atlantic coastline.

The discovery strongly supports the theory that Assateague’s horses descend from Spanish colonial stock brought to the Caribbean during early European expansion. Horses were central to Spain’s influence in the Americas, reshaping travel, warfare, and agriculture.

This genetic connection ties a modern coastal herd directly to the Age of Exploration, proving that colonial history survives not only in ruins and archives, but in living animals still moving across the landscape.

One case of neurological EHV-1 (EHM) suspected and euthanized due to severity of symptoms, two confirmed in Pennsylvania.

The EHM cases from the rodeo in TX are up to 41 across eight states. The PA cases are unrelated to the TX outbreak.

For the one-year anniversary of getting the ride on (and starting a friendship with) Clifford, Vivian made a most touching, celebratory video for her trainer, our friend Bennett Camp-Crowder. This golden horse looks at least as happy as his young BFF and I can almost hear him purring. Our Salute the Truth sons, Clifford, Blue and Teddy, could not be in a better place than where they’ve landed — at Bennett’s farm, each with his own doting girl. These are a couple of stills I took off Vivian’s video. 🧡🧡

My heart is so full it’s about to burst. Clifford was just voted BEST Pony Club camp horse and will have his name engraved in this perpetual trophy.

My friend, my fun Preliminary/** cross-country machine once upon a time, my sweet Clifford could not be happier than he is in Bennett Camp-Crowder’s excellent care and with his very own girl. Every good horse deserves this kind of “retirement” from harder competition, and to Cliff his new responsibilities are a cakewalk. Getting his own kid is just thick icing on the cake. Thanks to Bennett for giving him such a happy life.
