Our computer science class wrapped up one of their big spring semester projects today!

We built and programmed a mobile weather balloon tracker, and also designed and 3d printed a case for it.

This will allow us to track balloons from out in the field, hopefully leading to more precise (or even exact) recovery locations and data collection all the way to the ground.

We used a Lilygo T3 LoRa32 board, and programmed it to upload to SondeHub.org to make the tracking and weather data accessible. The students wired in a switch and a battery, and soldered in a GPS unit. Then, we used Fusion 360 to design a case we could 3D print to house the whole kit.

This will make our weather balloon tracking and recovery project much more advanced, and it gave us a good introduction to esp32 devices while letting us build on skills we already gained.

Our Cougars Rocket League team swept Sacred Heart HS 4 games to 0 today in the state playoffs round of 16. We will compete in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 4:00 against El Dorado HS. After a couple seasons absence from the elite 8, our Cougars look to be the first team in program history to make the semifinals! Don't miss it!

Our Cougars Rocket League team finished the regular season with a 5-2 record and ranked #5 in Arkansas!

The rocket league season kicked off this afternoon, our school is fielding 2 teams this season and both teams played well today.

Our A team swept 7A Fort Smith Northside today, outscoring them 23-2 across 3 games.

Our B team played hard against Greene County Tech, but fell in overtime of game 5 to lose the series.

All of our students played well and represented our school well, you won't want to miss out on following us this season!

Another successful weather balloon recovery!

Today some of our Digital Electronics students were able to participate in the recovery of a weather balloon! This particular balloon was launched from the NWS office in Springfield, MO Friday evening and landed in our area that evening. It reached a height of over 111,000 feet, observed temperatures as low as -90F on its 110 mile journey. Our students will be able to repurpose the instruments on board for other projects, but not before we show it off to other classes in the district.

Our Digital Electronics and Computer Science classes maintain a radio that tracks weather balloons that go through our area, and also helps collect the data from the instruments on board. This data collection is available for the NWS and other weather researchers to use to help improve forecasting in our area.

Officer Stevenson and our EAST students helped us scout the area using a drone prior to our search on foot. Mr McBride also came along for this recovery to see the action!
