One of the reasons clients come to BF is to improve their posture.

There are many causes, but here are the common ones: tight chest and upper traps pulling your shoulders forward, plus weak mid/lower traps and serratus anterior that can’t pull them back.

It takes time to fix, but it can be done with a consistent corrective exercise program. Here are a few examples:

Stretch what’s tight:

• Thoracic extensions
• Band over-and-backs

Strengthen what’s weak:

• Band pull-aparts
• Banded Y-raises
• Push-up plus

Stick with it a few times a week and you’ll see your posture shift. 💪

Here's a simple tweak that could add years to your life: variety.

Researchers followed over 100,000 people for more than 30 years (via the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study) and found that people who did the widest VARIETY of physical activities — not just the most total exercise — had a 19% lower risk of death from any cause, and 13-41% lower risk of death from heart disease, cancer, and respiratory disease.

Walking had one of the strongest individual links to a longer life (17% lower risk for the most active walkers), but the real standout was combining activities: walking + strength training + something social like tennis or rowing.

If your routine has looked the same for months, this is a nudge to add ONE new type of movement this week — a class, a hike, a resistance session, a bike ride.

Don't have time to work out today? This research might change your mind.

A new study out of Newcastle University found that just 10 minutes of hard exercise can flip genetic switches that help your body fight cancer. Researchers took blood from volunteers right after a single intense 10-minute cycling session and found it boosted DNA repair and slowed the growth signals in cancer cells — affecting over 1,300 genes.

The takeaway for busy parents, professionals, and everyone in between: you don't need a full hour at the gym to move the needle on your health. One hard 10-minute effort — stairs, a fast walk uphill, a quick bodyweight circuit — counts.

If today is a "no time" day, this is your sign to find 10 minutes anyway.

Strength training is powerful medicine 💪

Here's something worth knowing: inactive adults lose roughly 3–8% of their muscle every decade and with it goes a slower metabolism and more stored fat. The good news? Research shows just ten weeks of strength training can start rebuilding muscle, lift your resting metabolism, and trim fat along the way.

The point isn't the numbers. It's that your body responds at any age — and you don't have to grind to get there.

At Broadview Fitness, we start by figuring out exactly where you are, then build a simple, science-backed plan made just for you. No guesswork, no punishing workouts.
You don't need to grind to get stronger. Start where you are. 👋

We've noticed something after years of coaching here at Broadview Fitness 💪

The hard part usually isn't knowing why to exercise — it's turning a new workout into a routine, and a routine into a habit that sticks.

Most people come in ready to "go big or go home." But we meet you right where you are and map out the small, steady steps that actually build into habits.

Strength is built one week at a time. Come as you are. 👋

Turns out your bones love a challenge too. 💪

This week’s strength crew put in real work—lifting heavier, the kind of training that keeps bones strong and dense for the long haul. (Yes, that’s a thing, and yes, it gets more important as the years go on.)

The best part? Watching folks pick up loads they wouldn’t have touched a few months ago and walk out a little taller. That’s what staying strong and independent actually looks like.

Right here on Broadview, neighbors getting stronger together. 👋 Want in? Stop by—we’ll save you a spot.

One of my clients is 71. When she started, she was bench pressing 10 lb dumbbells. She now bench presses a 65 lb barbell with clean form.

She told she can feel the difference outside the gym. Carrying things, getting up and down, moving through her day with more ease.

Strength training does this for people in their 60s and 70s. It is not too late to start.

If you're 50 or older, this might be the most important thing you read today.

Most of us focus on strength as we age. But science now tells us that muscle power, your ability to move quickly and forcefully, declines even faster than strength and matters even more for staying independent.

Power is what catches you before a fall. It's what gets you up from a chair without thinking twice. It's what lets you keep doing the things you love, on your own terms, for decades to come.

A 2025 review in ACSM's Health and Fitness Journal confirmed that power training improves balance, mobility, and quality of life in older adults, often more than traditional strength training alone. And here's the part that changes everything:

You don't need to jump. You don't need extreme training. Exercises you may already know, like squats, deadlifts, and leg press, become power training the moment you focus on moving with speed and intention. That one shift makes all the difference.

You don't have to accept slowing down as inevitable. Your body is more capable than you think, and it responds to the right training at any age.

At Strengthspan we assess your power from day one using simple tests like the sit-to-stand and stair climb. From there we build a program around exactly what your body needs.

One session can change how you see what's possible.
