Meet Jack Freshnock, wearing his traditional grey jersey. We first met Jack a few months ago on our Sunday MRG Novice / Chill gravel rides. As one of the first to sign up for the MRG 26ish mile novice category, Jack impressed us by preparing by our side every Sunday leading up to the big day on May 8th. We were excited to watch his progress!

After riding for a few weeks, Jack’s confidence on the bike grew. While others were struggling, he was smashing everything we threw at him. From Cougar Canyon, to single track, to roadside couches. He showed no fear. We encouraged him to upgrade from the MRG novice ride to the MRG 65ish mile grinder. And he did!

But what better way to enjoy his first big gravel ride? How about bringing along one of his best bros, Ryan Boland? These guys worked together over the course of 6+ hours to put down one heck of a day!

Seriously, just look at the last photo in this story: 65ish miles of gravel goodness and a smile that tells all! (He’s not actually singing “Let a smile be your umbrella,” but his could have served as a parasol, it was so hot!)

We look forward to seeing Jack and Ryan rolling the MRG 100ish mile route in 2022. What about you? Don’t you want one of those Jack-ish smiles for your very own? The kind that almost meets at the back?

The MRG Oasis at miles 35 & 86 was hosted by our close friends over at Sentir Racing, aka SENTIR Racing/Spirit of Youth Cycling Club.

While you were rolling the hot-lap at Brewster Ranch, maybe even stopping to ogle the thoroughbred horses, the Sentir crew were busy grilling up your brats! What's that? That's right! The MRG Oasis was hastily baking brats on the day, with sauerkraut, mustard, and a b**r if your palate desired.

The crew even had a hitching post you could use to tie up your trusty steed. And if any of your friends were lost in the grassy fields along the way, Sentir Racing was ready with a didgeridoo.

With the artful insight by Sentir Racing's head honcho Kris Clark and the science of SENTIR Research Labs, we wouldn't be surprised if you rode away feeling like you just had an afternoon delight.

A personal photo story and note from our Race Director Kindler J. Chase:

A flood of memories washes over me when I look back on May 8th. However, none touched me so deeply as the sight of my wife’s epic fail on the devilish MRG finish, forcing riders up a steep kicker just before the line. I knew a few folks would be falling over as they struggled up the riser. Just one final kick after 114 miles. But I never imagined Sadi Owicz would be the first.

I was beaming with pride as I cheered Sadi on her way into the finish. But just as she was cresting the peak, a slo-mo trainwreck began to unfold. Her legs were still pedaling, but backwards! With my heart in my throat I made a mad dash towards her but was unable to keep woman and bike upright as her treacherous steed flipped her sideways onto the grassy knoll below. It was her first "real" crash on the bike.

When I reached Sadi she lay sprawled upon the ground, on the verge of passing out from heat exhaustion. I untangled her limbs and freed her from the traitorous bike. Lifted her into my arms. Gave her a loving hug, and whispered words of encouragement into her ear.

More than anything I wanted to help her drag herself across the last few meters. But she would have to get there on her own if she wanted to lay claim to a Mother Road Gravel finish line.

My wife's perseverance continues to amaze me. FFS, she even puts up with me!
