This October, the Bristol, Tennessee Parks and Recreation Department is providing young aspiring tennis pros with the opportunity to both learn and show off their skills on the court with two great programs. First, Reedy Toney, coach of the 2014, 2015, and 2016 Class AAA State Champion Tennessee High Viking boys’ tennis team and the 2015 USPTA High School Coach of the Year, will be conducting complimentary after school tennis lessons at the new Ida Stone Jones Community Tennis Center. All sessions are from 4:00-5:00 PM. There is no cost to attend, but pre-registration is required to participate. To register, participants may visit bristoltn.recdesk.com, create an account, and choose After School Tennis Session for the appropriate grade level. Registration will end on Monday, October 3rd.

Bob Helton Building Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to kick-off M.E.T.A.’s 25th Anniversary celebration

As summer winds down The Mountain Empire Tennis Association (M.E.T.A.) will be celebrating its 25th silver anniversary of community tennis. The celebration will be held at the new Ida Stone Jones Community Tennis Center on Friday, August 19, 2016. Festivities will begin at 6:00 P.M., with a ribbon-cutting dedication ceremony for the Bob Helton building, to officially recognize Bristol’s Bob Helton. Helton, a former King University (College) standout and the club pro at The Virginian, has won many local, regional and national titles. He is a 2001 inductee in the Tennessee Tennis Hall of Fame for his contributions to the Mountain Empire Tennis Community as a teaching professional who has taught thousands of children and adults. The Bob Helton building features women’s and men’s restroom facilities, an equipment storage area, office and work areas and an open-air covered area. The tennis facility is located at 740 Alabama Street, Bristol, Tennessee.

The association invites all those who have been a part of M.E.T.A. throughout the years to come and help us celebrate this Community Tennis milestone. Refreshments will be served, and door prizes will be offered. RSVP your intentions to attend this event by sending an E-mail to [email protected] or [email protected]. City officials and representatives from Bristol Tennessee City Schools gathered alongside community supporters to dedicate the new Ida Stone Jones Community Tennis Center with a First Serve Celebration. The occasion marks the culmination of a years-long effort to establish a centrally located, high quality public tennis facility to serve the community. The project came to fruition thanks to a strong public-private partnership, spearheaded by representatives of the Homer A. and Ida S. Jones Charitable Trust and the National Junior Tennis League of Bristol.

The new community tennis center is open to the public and will be maintained as a city park. It also serves as the new home courts for the State Champion Tennessee High Viking tennis teams. Additionally, NJTL of Bristol will continue its forty-year tradition of providing free or low cost tennis programming to all of Bristol's youth at the center, and the center will serve as host to league play along with junior and senior tournaments.

To all of you who have liked our page but who have not yet supported the project with a charitable tax deductible donation please consider doing so as we head into our Fall fundraising push and close in on our $860,000 goal having raised $766,000 to date. You can donate online at www.youcaring.com/bristoltennis. Also please invite your friends to like our page too. In supporting this project our city leaders recognize the development of a vibrant tennis community as an essential component of a robust parks and recreation program that will not only promote healthy lifestyles among our citizens but also attract new residents and businesses to our city and increase sports related tourism. This community oriented facility will also serve as the home of for Tennessee High Viking boys and girls tennis teams which has enjoyed tremendous success as the boys have captured state team titles in 2011, 2014 & 2015. Additionally the facility will include construction of the Bob Helton Building to honor the guru of Bristol tennis and the contribution he has made in teaching thousands of juniors and adults for more than 50 years. In summary we need everyone’s support, no donation is too small, in raising funds for this community project so don’t miss your opportunity to team up for tennis and honor Bob Helton, Bristol’s own tennis legend. Also with the excellent weather that we’ve enjoyed for the last several weeks construction of this state of the art tennis facility is proceeding at a break neck pace so be sure to check out the recently posted construction progress photo.
