We had a really nice time for a week in Banff Alberta!

Arrival in the Canadian Rockies We had long dreamed of skiing at Banff Ski Big3, and on this year’s ski safari, we finally pointed the truck north from the United States toward the heart of the Canadian Rockies. The welcome was immediate and dramatic: heavy snow-covered roads, strong winds, and an...

We've had a fantastic time in Banff; fun skiing and a great downtown. Here is the report that I wrote on Banff Sunshine.

This report is from Monday, January 19, 2026. When I woke up and checked the forecast, and saw it was calling for 14°F and blue skies, I knew I was in for a great day in Banff. Banff Sunshine Village in Alberta is one of the most scenic ski resorts in the world. If you get a chance to ski […]

We had an incredible time discovering this new mountain and staying with friends from Austin. From the first run to the last lift, every moment felt like a fresh adventure for us. The terrain and fresh snow challenged and inspired us, offering that perfect balance of thrill and beauty that makes a ski trip unforgettable.
What made it even more special was how seamlessly the town of Whitefish complements the resort. Here is my visit report on Whitefish Mountain.

Our first trip to Whitefish Mountain Resort, Montana, had a simple mission: explore a mountain we’d never skied and reconnect with longtime friends who had traded Austin’s heat for Montana’s powder. What didn’t we expect? A big-time refresh that turned our scouting mission into a full-on sto...

Joyce and I ticked off a bucket-list item today by snowmobiling in Yellowstone National Park between Jackson Hole and Schweitzer. We went into the park on a guided tour and covered around 65 miles. Highlights included watching Old Faithful erupt, a bison casually walking by our sled, seeing two other geysers erupt, spotting a bald eagle and a golden eagle, and watching several different herds of bison along the route. The park is so uncrowded, and the winter scenery is fantastic. Next stop Schweitzer, Idaho.

We finally pointed the skis toward our long-planned 2026 trip—albeit with a slightly delayed launch. Instead of our previously announced south-to-north progression, starting in New Mexico before chasing skiing fun through Colorado and Utah, this year’s journey began in Jackson. The change in plans had nothing to do with snow conditions out West. Life, as it tends to do, stepped in. On February 5, I wrapped up a round of radiation treatments for prostate cancer—caught early, highly treatable, and firmly in the rearview mirror. We arrived in Jackson on 2/7, ready for skiing. Not bad for sounding like a stereotypical Boomer oversharing about his health, right?

There was another plot twist this season as well: somewhere along the way, I became—unofficially—the oldest intern in the ski industry. I’ve been writing for SnowBrains, the largest independent online ski magazine, and I’ll be sharing those stories here as they roll out. Yes, that includes a deep dive into the quest for the perfect Old Fashioned at ski resorts across the West—because après matters!

Inspired by the famous Robert Earl Keen song, our theme this year is “The piste goes on forever and the après never ends!” Here’s the report from Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

Report from February 7-10 Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Wyoming, was unequivocally the place to be this week—a convergence of world-class skiing, electric atmosphere, and all-time stoke that seemed to radiate from every peak of the resort. Kings and Queens of Corbet’s The week kicked off Saturda...

It was the spring of 1984, and I was a graduate student when I spotted a small notice for a ParaSki competition at West Mountain near Glens Falls, New York. It was just a three-hour drive from campus and my home drop-zone at the Malone Parachute Club. At the time, I’d been skiing for about seven y...

Memorable on-mountain dining takes many forms. Sometimes it’s as simple as pulling an Uncrustable from your pocket during a snowy powder day—quick, satisfying, and exactly right for the moment. Other times, especially after several days of skiing, the perfect experience is a long, relaxing lunch...

We are on the way back to Austin from Seattle and stopped by Solitude and Brighton for a day rest. We hiked up to Solitude Lake from Silver Lake. Since we did the Geology Tour while we skied at Solitude we knew some things about the lake. On the far side of the lake was an old mine and bunkhouse. One night during a fierce blizzard an avalanche wiped out the bunkhouse killing a number of the miners. I know one of the Geology guides at Solitude is a follower of BSG so if he sees this he could maybe comment with some more granularity. (Sorry I don't remember your name) I think we foind the old mine entrance which appears intentionally collapsed.

OUR 2026 ski odyssey will be out shortly!
