The annual Joe Wikler Memorial Mixed Open Doubles Tournament took place on Saturday, July 17th. This year’s draw consisted of thirteen teams with a total of twenty-six players. Joe Wikler was a well known tennis player in the Bridgton tennis community and known for his underarm spin serves. Court two at Bridgton Highlands was resurfaced in honor of Joe’s memory with a plaque on the court’s entrance. The level of tennis was impressive throughout the day and the rain managed to stayed away until the final ball was struck. Rick Siegrist, a close friend of Joe’s said, “Joe may have played a hand in keeping the tournament day dry, just in time.”
In the first semi-final match of the main draw, Michael Coleman and Polly Mackenzie relied on aggressive play to defeat Mary Johnson and Henry C***s. In the second semi-final match, David Chaffee and Carol Kelley’s experience as a regular doubles pairing to get through John Waldie and Christine Rothman. In the finals, Coleman and Mackenzie got off to a fast start, but Chaffee and Kelley battled to keep striking distance. In the end, Coleman and Mackenzie captured the championship match 8-4. In the finals for the consolation draw, husband and wife duo, Walter and Martha Grzyb were defeated by Arthur Goldsmith and Megan Goldsmith. Congratulations to the winners and finalist of both draws and thank you to all the players for your participation and excellent play. Tennis Director Justin Chaffee would like to thank Mike and Lynn Fusco for their hard work behind the scenes. George Thomas and his crew for keeping the tennis courts in great shape and Bridgton Highlands for hosting the event.
