📢 Community Notice: Strengthening Parental Responsibility in Monroe Township 📢

The Township of Monroe has updated Ordinance O:32-2025, with a significant focus on the role of parents and guardians in ensuring the safety of our youth. Under the updated Section 118-5 (Parental Responsibility), the community is moving toward a model of shared accountability for juvenile welfare.

What Parents and Guardians Need to Know:

• ⚖️ Legal Duty of Supervision: It is now prohibited for any parent or legal guardian to allow a minor to violate curfew or other prohibited acts through a failure to exercise proper supervision and control.

• 🕵️‍♂️ Whereabouts & Associations: Under the ordinance, "supervision" means more than just being home; parents are expected to have knowledge of a minor’s whereabouts, associations, and activities.

• 🚨 Evidence of Violation: If a minor is apprehended during curfew hours, it is considered prima facie evidence that the parent or guardian has violated the ordinance. Failure to know where a minor is or who they are with during these hours also constitutes evidence of a violation.

• 👨‍⚖️ Court & Penalties: For a first offense, parents may be summoned to Municipal Court and ordered to provide better supervision. Subsequent violations or serious offenses can lead to fines up to $2,000, up to 90 days in jail, and community service—which the court may require to be performed jointly by the parent and the minor.

Quick Curfew Recap:

• Standard Hours: 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.
• Halloween (Oct 30 & 31): Curfew starts early at 8:00 p.m.
