Before anything looks like a technique, the real question is what information is available and how each athlete is organizing around it. This is where perception drives action, not as a concept, but as a continuous loop between movement and environment. What you pick up in the exchange shapes what you do next, and what you do immediately changes what can be picked up.

One athlete is trying to create and amplify opportunities for upper body connection by producing instability through hands, head, and elbow interactions, drawing reactions that open pathways to the shoulders. The other is working to shut those down early, compressing space, organizing around the hips, and simplifying the problem into control or escape before those upper body connections can stabilize. Grips are not goals in themselves, but ways of constraining the other person’s options and steering what actions become possible.

Nothing is fixed long enough to treat as a position. As soon as a connection starts to form, the constraints of the situation change and the problem reorganizes. The skill is not in executing a preset solution, but in staying attuned to the evolving information and acting in a way that fits what is actually emerging in the interaction.
