🌻 Cue Cancer Season.. ο»ΏSummer isn’t asking that of you.

The Summer Solstice isn't just a moment in time β€” it's a threshold. The longest day of the year. The day the sun reaches its absolute zenith and pours more light, more heat, more solar intensity into a single revolution of the Earth than at any other point in the year.

And today we find ourselves just barely on the other side of it β€” one step past the peak, still vibrating with everything it stirred.

Naturally, the world tends to meet that energy by doing more. We stay out later, go to bed later. We make more plans. We say yes to more. We lean into summer’s brightness and fullness and momentum, often without questioning whether our bodies are actually asking for the same thing.

I want to offer you a different perspective here. An older one. A wiser one. One that completely changed my experience of Summer.

Ayurveda, the ancient science of life that shapes so much of how I teach, sees summer in a way that often surprises people, including me. Summer, for all its beauty, brightness, and outward energy, is not asking us to do more, it is asking for more space. It is asking for more space in the body, more space in the nervous system, more space between what is being asked of us and how quickly we respond. It is asking for enough spaciousness that we can actually hear what our body is saying before it has to say it louder.

This was such a profound shift for me when I first began to understand it. Summer looks expansive. It looks social, abundant, alive, and full. The days stretch out. The light lingers. Life seems to swell in every direction. And because of that, it is so easy to assume that we are meant to match that energy by doing more, staying out later, saying yes more often, and filling every available space with activity.

But that is not actually what the body is asking for.

For all its beauty, radiance, and vitality, summer is also a season that can quietly weaken and deplete us. The heat draws moisture from the body and disperses energy outward. It can leave digestion more vulnerable, the nervous system more taxed, and the whole system more easily drained than we realize. This is not always obvious at first, especially because summer can feel so alive and social and full of possibility. But beneath all of that, the body is often working much harder than we think just to stay balanced.

Summer asks us to leave enough space to cool down, enough space to digest, enough space to soften, enough space to rest before exhaustion forces us to. It asks us not to confuse fullness with nourishment. It asks us not to assume that because life is vibrant and overflowing around us, we too are meant to override our limits and keep reaching for more.

There is such deep wisdom in this. Space is not emptiness. Space is what allows us to stay connected to ourselves. It is what allows the breath to deepen, the mind to settle, the body to regulate, and clarity to return.

It is what allows us to receive summer without being consumed by it.

Summer has taught me to become more protective of space. More reverent with my energy. More willing to leave room for quiet, for cooling, for restoration, for doing less without feeling like I am somehow missing life. Because often that is exactly where life becomes more available. Not in the constant filling, but in the room we leave for something deeper to arrive.

Yesterday morning in Mindful Movement, on the Solstice itself, at the very peak of all that solar energy, we practiced something that felt both simple and radical. We practiced stillness at the summit.

We talked about Pitta and the way summer heat accumulates in the body, not only as inflammation, acidity, or digestive upset, but also as irritability, impatience, frustration, and that particular kind of intensity that makes it harder to soften, harder to rest, and harder to let things be imperfect.

And then, right on cue, every year, in the ultimate act of balance, as the sun reaches that intense peak, it also moves into Cancer.

This is one of the things I love so much about the intelligence of the cosmos. At the very moment we reach the height of solar fire, the sky hands us Cancer, with all of its water, nourishment, tenderness, and care. It is the medicine arriving inside the intensity itself.

Cancer carries the mother principle, not in the literal or traditional sense, but as a deeper archetypal force within all of us. It is the energy of water, energy that nourishes, protects, softens, and holds, the part of us that knows how to create safety, offer care, and make enough room to finally exhale.

To me, that feels like the real invitation of this season. It is not more fire we need. It is more Water.

More tending. More listening. More cooling. More care. More reverence for what the body is already trying to manage beneath the surface.

The Solstice may be one day, but its wisdom belongs to the whole season. If summer has already been asking more of you than you expected, physically, emotionally, or energetically, you are not imagining it. This is a time to be thoughtful with your energy, generous with your rest, and willing to slow down before depletion forces the issue.

Our classes are a place where we explore all of this together, not only through movement, but through context, wisdom, and practices that help us live in closer relationship with the rhythms that are shaping us.

Come practice with us.

πŸŽ‚πŸŽ‰ Happy Birthday, Amy! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‚

Today we’re celebrating you and the peaceful, compassionate, deeply sacred presence you bring to our community. Amy’s work is rooted in helping people better understand, plan for, and navigate the practical and philosophical concerns that surround dying and death β€” and she does so with such care, reverence, and heart.

As a certified death doula, Reiki practitioner, and medium, Amy offers a calming presence around one of life’s most tender thresholds. Her work helps soften fear, open meaningful conversation, and create more space for peace, understanding, and spiritual connection.

Amy reminds us that when we are willing to bring tenderness and presence to the places we often avoid, fear can begin to loosen its grip, and something more peaceful, honest, and sacred can emerge.

Amy, we are so grateful for you! πŸ’›

Let’s show Amy some birthday love in the comments!

πŸŒ™ Sometimes the deepest healing happens when we slow all the way down.

Join us Wednesdays, July 8–29 from 7:30–8:30 PM for Gentle Yin β€” a quiet, floor-based yoga practice designed to help you soften into your body, calm your nervous system, and gently unwind layers of tension.

Sometimes called the quiet yoga, yin invites you into longer-held shapes with very little movement. Instead of flowing from pose to pose, you’ll ease into supportive stretches that nourish the connective tissues β€” especially the fascia β€” while creating space to notice sensation, breath, and subtle shifts within.

πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ Learn the foundations of yin in a supportive, approachable way
🌿 Explore gentle, sustainable stretches without pushing or forcing
🧱 Use props to support your body during longer holds
🌬️ Practice slowing down, listening inward, and working with sensation

In yin, the focus is not on how a pose looks, but how it feels. You’ll be guided to work at about 50–60% of your capacity β€” enough to feel something, without moving into pain or strain. Over time, this quiet practice can support mobility, calm the nervous system, and help the body soften gradually from the inside out.

No previous yoga experience is needed β€” just a little curiosity and a willingness to slow down and listen to your body. ✨

β˜€οΈ The Summer Solstice invites us to honor the light within and around us.

Join us Saturday, June 20 from 7:00–8:00 PM for Summer Solstice Sound Journey & Restorative Bliss β€” an evening designed to help you soften, receive, and align with the radiant energy of abundance, vitality, and compassionate transformation.

πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ Rest into gentle restorative postures that support deep release
🎢 Receive the healing vibrations of Tibetan and crystal singing bowls
🌊 Connect with the nourishing energy of Cancer season and the Divine Mother

Together, we’ll honor this sacred turning point β€” the longest day of the year β€” as a threshold for illumination, healing, and inner renewal.

The Summer Solstice reminds us that the light outside of us also lives within us, illuminating where we are ready to break free, break through, and evolve.

Leave feeling restored, spacious, held, and connected to the warm embrace of your own inner light. ✨

πŸŽ‚πŸŽ‰ Happy Birthday to our wonderful teacher, Katie Wedding! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‚

Today we’re celebrating Katie and the calm, steady, deeply compassionate presence she brings to our community. Katie’s work centers on restorative yoga and nervous system healing β€” and you can feel that gentle, grounded care woven throughout the spaces she creates.

Through soft movement, breath, and intentional rest, Katie offers students a place to slow down, soften, regulate, and meet themselves with kindness. Her approach reminds us that healing often begins in the quiet moments, when the body feels safe enough to exhale, release, and return to its own inner steadiness.

Informed by her background in education, counseling, and grief support, Katie brings a beautifully therapeutic presence to her work. She holds space with warmth, wisdom, and deep respect for the tender transitions we all move through in life.

Katie, we are so grateful for your presence, your care, and the peaceful energy you bring to Joy of Yoga. πŸ’›
