David Bennett Chess in DC

David Bennett Chess in DC Chess coaching & community events with National Master David Bennett, trainer for all ages and levels & 6 DC champs. Group & 1x1 classes. "My sons loved today!

Let's come up with a personalized plan to break through to the next level, in chess & most importantly in life! "CM/NM David Bennett is my 8 yr old son, Adamson Steiner's, chess coach and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a chess coach for their child. David is very patient and connects well with my son who is generally slow to warm up to people and has a hard time sitting still. David'

s lessons are fun and keeps my son engaged (and sitting...or at least standing by the board). Adamson always looks forward to meeting with his chess coach and asks me to schedule more lessons. Adamson has been playing tournaments since November of '15 when he basically knew how to move the pieces. He wanted to play chess because his older cousins play chess tournaments in Ohio. Since getting David as his coach in January '16, Adamson has gone from a preliminary rating of 440 to over 1000 in less than 6 months (and over 1500 in less than a year). David is an awesome coach and a really nice guy. Cannot recommend him enough!"

~Helena S. "I received lessons from David Bennett for several weeks recently in an effort to strengthen my chess game. The objective was to do better when playing my chess “partner” on Friday nights. Before I met David, I was losing two-thirds of my games. After a few weekly lessons of about two hours each lesson, he gave me an organized strategy for openings and set me up with some good “forced” lines I could use. The result was that I am now winning most of my games against my playing partner. He is an excellent teacher, very organized, very articulate, and very adroitly fits his instruction to my own needs as a chess player. He also (without charging me) gave me good references to several sources for further study and provided lines to supplement the lessons. He is very personable and effective as a teacher and I would recommend him without qualification to anyone seeking to improve their game."

~Dave L. I just love that you are challenging the boys. At an old school, the kids just played, supervised by a volunteer. We are so fortunate to have your skills & enthusiasm. My kindergartner is already showing signs of outwitting me! I wish I had you as a teacher/coach. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity!"

~Erica C. "In the months that I have known David, I’ve found him to be a great teacher. I have been especially impressed by his devotion to helping me improve as a chess player. He has encouraged me to go to tournaments and compete. Under his guidance my rating has consistently gone up. I started out winning only one game a tournament and now I can win a couple as well as draw some. He is really devoted to developing his students' positional and calculating skills. David also tailors his teachings to the individual weaknesses of his students. He doesn’t just teach from a book, but likes to see his student’s games, analyze them, and show where they went wrong. This has helped me become more self-aware of the areas I struggle with and correct them. This individualized teaching style coupled with his devotion to helping his students makes all the difference. He is a fun guy to be around and is very flexible when it comes to rescheduling sessions. Whether people are looking to become a GM or just to be able to beat their friends, David is the guy to go to!"

~Nick B. "I can’t thank you enough for sharing your love of chess with Nico and Sammy. You are a remarkably patient and skilled teacher, and Nico and Sammy are very lucky to have you at their side each week. Thank you again for everything."

~Chris L. "David is a highly talented chess teacher. I've been very impressed by his ability to wade through a morass of opening questions and tactical frustrations and find the point where your game needs improvement. It's that judgment and guidance where he has been able to help me improve the most. I just finished my first tournament since I was 12 yrs old and I came out of it with 5 points out of 7 (only 1 loss) and some prize money. I have to attribute a lot of this to David!"

~Abraham P. "Thanks, David. We are so happy that you are Graham's coach! He seems to be learning a lot."

~Kelly N. "David's a great chess tutor. Highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic, he advanced my previous passing interest into a greater appreciation and enjoyment of the game. I recommend without hesitation."

~Scott B.

Happy National Chess Day! 2025 is FIDE's "Year of Social Chess." These are some updates on what I and others in the DC community, and DMV (DC, MD, VA) region more broadly, are doing to make an impact through the universal language of chess!

Big Chair Chess Club has really been making Big Moves. Think B4 U Move. So much great social impact work, like free classes at the Martha's Table in SE DC, and important work in prisons, including job training. Wendell Hankins and Cory Brown are behind the magic. They'll be hosting their second Poetic Checkmate event at Busboys and Poets in Anacostia next month, so don't miss it!

Malcolm Wooten, former Howard University Chess Club president, founded Live Chess and he partners with Capital Chess and Checkers to hold regular events at Potter House in the Adams Morgan Neighborhood.

I continue my goal of making chess accessible across DC by teaching at Francis Gregory Neighborhood Library in SE every Wednesday from 6:30 till closing at 8pm. I think that's been going on since 2018. Shoutout to Neil Bailey for maintaining lots of programming for the community. We're also planning another Battle of the Branches event at MLK Library, where players from across the District (and beyond) can engage in the ultimate battle of the minds – the Royal Game.

Chess Girls DC and DC Chess Association are hosting the Women and Girls Regionals on Oct. 18th at the Washington Hilton on Connective Ave, DC. They also continue our partnership with The Darcy, hosting regular happy hour events there (as with Femme Fatale) to encourage more women to join chess and to create a welcoming and supportive environment. I am so happy to see that Equity in Chess has become an increasingly important priority.

Another long term partnership of mine, going back nearly a decade, continues at Washington Yu Ying, the Chinese immersion DCPS charter school in the Brookland neighborhood of NE DC. The after school REEF team led by Kareem Nuri is amazing. We look forward to participating in Big Chair Chess Club's second Poetic Checkmate event (chess tourney and and slam poetry) in November at the Anacostia Busboys and Poets.

My international adult classes are Sundays at 9am ET. Free classes to make it accessible to anyone in the world with an Internet connection - just optional tips.

Pictures of some fun simuls recently: Westfield Montgomery in N. Bethesda, MD, with NM Bijan Tahmassebi, and at CHOP Chess Club in Clinton, MD, organized by the wonderful Larry Smaw with legacy Black Knights Chess Clubs members in attendance! Sunny on Board 1 defeated me in beautiful, instructive fashion — breaking down what he was doing along the way as I love to chat-and-play! In the Bethesda one, Bijan and I worked better as teammates than opponents over the years (it was a spontaneous tandem simul like with Timur Gareyev at Rockville Chess Club a couple years back) and we scored 34.5 out of 35 — a challenger from Erie, PA, offered a gentlemanly draw after trapping our queen!

Reached 1k today on my YouTube channel "Chess on the Brain with NM David Bennett" for National Chess Day, perfect timing! Thanks YouTube Chess Community for your support. 🙏🏼 I post a lot of Chess 960 aka Fischer Random Chess aka Freestyle Chess content there — I'm glad to see how big it has become, with even the Kasparov-Anand 30 year anniversary match (which was incredibly historic; they played atop the World Trade Center) featuring Fischer Random games. I don't care about the # so much, but may as well have fun with it, so as a token of my appreciation, I want to give out a free lesson to assess your game overall, come up with a tailored improvement plan for you, and spar a bit. I originally said that it would go to #1000 but it's not clear who that is (only public channel subscribers are shown), so I'll give it to one of the next 10 commenters of any video at random - using the static noise generator of random.org of course. Sensing a "random" theme? At any rate, you can just join my weekly Sunday class for a free group lesson as well as at Francis Gregory Neighborhood Library for in person. The channel is .

For those in the Dulles airport area, I teach the Kings Indian Chess group on Sundays from 2 to 4.

As for some shootouts, congrats to my student Jesse, former DC (I think K-8) Champion, who is in his senior year and getting ready for college! His family has been so supportive of him over the years. He attended a college transition program at Oxford over the summer and I am sure that he has some exciting things in store. (Now I'm seeing my students cycling through, so I know I'm getting older!)

My student Arjun came in second for his category in the Virginia State Championship, while Calvin and Ethan scored first in their K-3 and K-5 categories at a recent DC Scholastic Chess event.

Since getting Instagram recently, I've been using that the most. You can be in touch with me there at instagram.com/davidbennettchess

There's probably more, so I'll add those in comments or edits later! May your fall harvest (and chess playing) be bountiful!

I finally touched up my site! Summer classes with IM Oladapo Adu are updated (our third straight year of this collab!) and I embedded a bunch of YouTube videos on the International Adult Class page. We've done 70+ videos since I began recording a few years ago, so it made sense to include that. Check out the site - you'll see opportunities for both youth and adults. www.chessprofessor.net

Reflecting on 10 years of teaching now, one of the great things about working for yourself (apart from not needing to answer to "the man" 😆) is that you gain so many skills - since unless you hire people, you gotta manage the whole thing yourself. I enjoy the process. My brother gave me great advice early on (2015) about creating an "ecosystem" and that's really helped with bringing organic traffic to the site. Hope you like the site & join some classes!

😝

Edit: I take that back. While I aim to not become overly dependent on AI, I have only (with my knowledge haha) used it once in my social media: thumbnails on YouTube videos. Because, well, they're just thumbnails, and nobody's got time for that. A slippery slope, I know... 🏂🏼

from came out to support 's amazing activities as part of his Master Class globetrotting tour. It was a pleasure to meet the inspirational Tunde in person and to see all of the wonderful folks that make the DC Chess Community strong! Fun & insane games (the hippo and the bird come to play!) with .d, , and Tyrone! Come out to Sundays @ 5:30 and support!

Donate here to help the movement to provide the benefits of chess all over DC, including East of the River, the criminal justice system, at risk youth, jobs training, and more. I love what they're doing and look forward to bringing my students to their events as we continue in partnership!

Another awesome chess night The Darcy Hotel! Thank you Gerrard Street Kitchen DC for hosting us in your restaurant with delicious chess themed food and cocktails for our third chess event since last fall!

We didn't quite have chess "power couples" end up showing up 😆...more like friends playing together. Unfortunately no one beat me to win a free night's stay at The Darcy, but Alon and Usaf came close in an epic endgame that went on for hours. They had five pawns for my knight at one point and I was dangling by a thread.

Funny enough, in another game, the theme of the night was the wraparound of the bishop (b5-a4-b3) Ruy Lopez style...and the Noah's Ark Trap that can result. But hey, never underestimate the power of making your opponent overextend themselves into awkward positions!

Tied for first in the DC Black Knights Chess Championship yesterday!

It was an honor to play side-by-side with the local legends IM Oladapo Adu and NM Oliver Kayende.
Excellent event by the Black Knights and directing by Roland Thorpe of Waldorf Chess Club.

There was a big rating differential in the games given that it was a relatively small pool with a wide range of ratings, which does greatly favor the top seeds, but it was still a lot of fun to play in. Hoping to do the Eastern Open at the end of the year!

My free DC chess classes continue Wednesdays @6:30 at Francis Gregory Neighborhood Library! Fun chess play & engaging master instruction for all levels & ages!

We have a wonderful community of chess players. I began as a volunteer at the library back in 2018 and it's one of my favorite parts of my teaching week. I helped organize the Battle of the Branches event at MLK Library with great chess organizers in the DC community like us_chess_ctr Dubian Campbell! Hoping to get another one going again this spring, and definitely in the fall!

It's unfortunate, but this must be said. Recently, someone has attempted to intimidate me from going to teach at this library. But I will not be intimidated, I won't apologize for continuing to do the work I've done to serve communities around the region with the highest quality chess instruction I can give. For those who do their best to serve people of all walks of life, including in communities who don't often get the services that they deserve, we need to push for all we can get. Pins and forks and skewers are for the chess board - we come together as frenemies over the 64 squares - but these tactics aren't meant to be used in the community that we love. And it's not too late for this individual to let go of their long-held anger & join forces with the entirety of the community in a healthy way. Big things are happening in chess; it's becoming more inclusive, more opportunities are opening up...but we need to keep pushing for more equity, more diversity, more access in underserved areas, more travel & accommodations & norm & scholarship opportunities for passionate players who need it - enhancing the broader community & bringing us together in the game that we all love, the ultimate equalizer, a medium by which we can connect with people in ways we never could have imagined.
