Congratulations, Dimitri Abenoja, Student of the Month for September 2026! 🎉

Dimitri is 8 years old, and he is the second generation of his family on our mats. His mother, Athena, began her own Jiu-Jitsu journey here at 14. She stepped away to raise a family, and now she is back training alongside both Dimitri (8) and Aviana (10). Bravo Mom. Way to lead from the front.

Dimitri started just under two years ago in our 6-8-year-olds' program, and he has had a genuine love for Jiu-Jitsu from day one. He absorbs quietly in class, applies what he learned the moment he steps into a match, and is always willing to put in the extra work.

He has also learned to slow down when processing new information, and his concentration and focus have improved as a result. Dimitri rarely misses class. Unless it is for a Disneyland family vacation. 😃

In November 2025, Dimitri was invited into the Kids Black Belt Club, which recognizes students who consistently show focus, discipline, commitment, coachability, and a willingness to do the extra work.

This coming Saturday, Dimitri is challenging himself and representing the Team at the Jiu-Jitsu World League tournament in Stockton.

Great job, Dimitri. We are proud of your work, your growth, and your love for Jiu-Jitsu. Keep learning, keep competing, and keep having fun. You earned this.

Ten Jiu-Jitsu Black Belts including four Gracie family members came together in Long Beach, California to teach a benefit seminar for the family of a student who tragically died in car accident last month. Between all participants and others who donate to the cause, little under 10K was collected and passed on to Javier Torres's family. While nothing can compare to the pain and discomfort of a sudden death in anyone's family, the energy felt inside Neutral Grounds Jiu-Jitsu Academy last Thursday, September 12 certainly showed his family how much he was he was loved. It was unbelievable.

Witnessing all of Javier's teammates and friends coming together to support their JiuJitsu fellow was one of the most inspiring things I've ever been a part of. The demonstration of camaraderie, brotherhood and love by everyone in there is what life is all about. It's what Martial Arts is all about. Selflessness, compassion, humility, unity. May Javier's family find strength and comfort in this difficult time, and as for all of us who were there to celebrate his life that day, we were honored to be part of this special moment. Huge props to Neutral Grounds head instructor Evaldo Lima for this beautiful initiative. Rest in peace, "Javi".
