Repost from 2020- THIS is why “sprint” training and staring at cones for “agility” training are not optimal for field and court athletes! It’s that simple.
Read this over 5 yrs ago & after watching countless hrs of our athletes’ game film & our videos of them training ™️ at competitive “game speed”, it’s absolutely true! This was written 20 yrs ago but doesn’t get much traction, as it runs contrary 2 the old dogmas!

Falls in line with our “external vs internal focus” posts! Torso angles, hip height, knee drive, recovery phase ALL different when sprinting in a
“chaotic” environment, escaping or preparing for collisions and changes of direction after short accelerations!
Sprinting in context to your

If at any time, you or your athletes, while running “agility drills”, are looking down at your/their feet and/or inanimate object, (which is never on the field during competition), you might want to rethink your program! Coordination patterns differ between rehearsed COD & athletic COD! Actually, the word “drill” should not be used with the word agility! Drill is a trained, rehearsed pattern movement whereas “agility” is a developed skill. Standby KBP is working on a Sport Movement Clinic for coaches and athletes. Truly understanding the science behind agility skill acquisition is too important not to know. We’re still seeing non applicable/non contextual DRILLS masquerading as AGILITY training. ™️ .pete.raiders .soccer

Coaches! Don’t be frustrated when your athletes fail to “perform on demand” in open field environments, when you only train them in closed environments, devoid of contextual stimuli!
Failure to obtain or maintain “positioning” to make plays, oftentimes has little to do with speed, strength or “technique”. Training ath’s 2 display “flawless” technique drills in a closed environment, does little in preparation for a chaotic & stimulus rich environment.
All sports have context specific mov’t requirements, that emerge through interactions. Training should consist of these “interactions” if we expect athletes to exploit opportunities or explore other options, to solve the problem.
The more athletes experience these interactions, the more likely they will make better mov’t decisions, when it counts!

If you trained @ KB Performance Training then you definitely knew Chipper the amazing gym dog. He was Coach KBs shadow♥️. Never left his side. He will be seen in almost all our athlete pictures because he was valued staff😊. He was the chaser of airplanes and all things in the sky, the sprinter up and down the fence of 110 trying to catch an ambulance or motorcycle, the attacker of toes that spun the wheels of the benches and the protector of Bob (don’t punch him!) KB rescued Chipper from the pound. Chipper was returned to the pound 3 different times before he found a forever home with KB♥️♥️♥️. Chipper will forever be in our hearts ♥️
