Happy Capy Sunday.

Why does our capybara turn into a giant fuzzy potato?

When capybaras are relaxed or enjoying attention, you may notice their coat standing up and their whole body looking extra round and fluffy. This is called piloerection—the movement of the hairs away from the skin.

Did you know Asian Small Clawed Otters have the smallest claws of any otter species, making their paws incredibly dexterous for finding and handling food? Instead of swallowing prey whole, they often use their paws to inspect and manipulate their food before eating.

North American porcupines are built to climb, gnaw, and apparently look adorably cute while sleeping.

Check out Thatcher’s teeth! Like other rodents, a porcupine's front incisors grow continuously throughout its life. The orange color isn't from staining—the front surface of the teeth contains iron-rich enamel, which helps make the incisors strong for gnawing through tough vegetation and bark.

When playing in a water dish is much more fun than swimming in an actual pool.

Asian Small Clawed Otters are excellent swimmers-out unlike many otters, they spend a considerable amount of time on land. They forage in shallow water, muddy banks, rice paddies, streams and wetlands and spend substantial time walking, digging, grooming, resting and playing on land.
Their reduced webbing on their paws and their short claws give their fingers exceptional mobility, while other species of otters are more strongly adapted to swimming and aquatic pursuit of prey.

Wait… THAT’S a red fox?!

Despite the name, red foxes don’t always come in red.

Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) can occur in a variety of coat colors. Everest displays a lavender/blue-type coloration, giving the coat beautiful silvery-gray, taupe and lavender tones.

The “blue” color isn’t actually blue pigment. Changes in the way normal pigments are produced and expressed can alter the appearance of the darker colors in the coat, creating shades that can look gray, blue, brown or even purple depending on the lighting.

Look closely at the nose and eyes, too. Pigment differences don't always affect only the fur—they can also influence pigmentation elsewhere on the body.

Did you know Asian small-clawed otters are the most social of all otter species?
Among carnivores, they are remarkably social-more like wolves or meerkats than most solitary mustelids. In the wild they typically live in family groups of 20 individual but can far exceed this number.

We are booking January-March Swimming with Otters now. You can book here ⬇️
