I often see inspiration (inhalation) referred to as 'ju' 柔, or soft, and expiration (exhalation) referred to as 'go' 剛, or hard. When we consider the mechanics of ventilation however we see that inspiration (inhalation) is a product of contraction (of the diaphragm and the external intercostal muscles) while expiration is a product of relaxation of same. In truth, breathing (including the breathing in Sanchin kata), and technique in general, is neither one nor the other but rather a combination of two aspects that may not exist independently of each other.
