The golf swing is full of “cause and effect” patterns, and many things happen from a basic human movement standpoint. The amateur on the left gets the lead arm working across the chest too early, which causes the trail arm to fold sooner and reduces the demand on the chest to keep turning.

The pro’s lead arm doesn’t race across the chest as early, which keeps the trail arm more extended and increases the demand on the chest to rotate. As a result, the pro has more chest rotation at P3 (first arm parallel) and gains more depth by the top of the backswing.

Matt plays for UH, and I have been helping him with his swing remotely over the past year. He had a tendency to get a little across the line with a cupped lead wrist (left image), which would get him narrow and steep and lead to less predictable ball flights than he would like.

He sent me the swing on the right today, and this is something he has worked on very hard over a period of time through grip,forearm roll, lead-arm-only and pause drills (among others). His arm structure is miles better, the lead wrist is much flatter, and he’s no longer across the line.

All of that adds up to a wider, more on-plane, repeatable downswing and a more predictable ball flight. Great work Matt! 📐
