One option when escaping knee on belly is to enter into Backside 50/50 — remember, when you escape a lower body dominant pin like this, the counter attack will be at your partner’s lower body. Counter attacking when you escape is always a good idea, as we interrupt our partner’s rhythm. Whoever feels and controls the rhythm usually wins the match.

Their knee is on my belly? No-sir-ree. Can’t have that. Get their hands to the mat and go right in for the kill by utilizing the single leg wrestle up but entering cross ashi. We call this position behind them with the foot shelved the shelf position — does your school have a different name?

Working escapes into counter attacking all month long! This week we’ve been working escaping into this single leg position and causing a positional dilemma for our partner. In this clip, we skip the positional dilemma and go straight for the kill by attacking cross ashi.

So much of grappling can be thought of like a dance. And if you lead that dance — you create the tempo and rhythm — you have an edge to decide when you want to interrupt that rhythm. Initiation is therefore rewarded far more than merely reacting to your partner, provided you initiate and lead the dance.

The secret to passing the guard isn’t the pass itself... it’s the PRE-WORK. 🧠🥋

In this breakdown, we look at the concept of “The Bite.” Get your partner to commit to defending an inside or outside pass — if they bite to defend the inside pass, pass to the outside. If they bite to defend the outside pass, pass to the inside.

It’s all about finding angles and getting inside or outside frames.

Don’t let frames point at you. Find angles unto this end. Force a bite. These are the tools to use when navigating the chaos before you ever lock in a knee slice or leg drag or whatever pass you’d like. Once you clear that initial chaos and secure your angle, your passing percentage skyrockets. 📈

Our counter offensive opportunities when escaping a pin will be primarily guided by a simple question: are they pinning me with their upper body primarily or lower body primarily?

When we find ourselves on the bottom of a hip and knee post situation, one option we can hunt is the te gatame, the “shotgun armbar.”

As with any arm bar, it’s critical we immobilize the shoulder and then place the elbow over a fulcrum.

In this clip, you’ll see us immobilize the shoulder by bringing our far side knee to join forces with our near side leg at the shoulder. Combined with holstering the elbow and bringing our hip (the fulcrum) to the holster, we can create a serious amount of leverage for a finish.

Connect the knee and elbow, remove the head control, and voila — you aren’t stuck in side control. 🧙‍♂️ 🤓
