Considering a new Shotgun for Hunting?
Improve its performance with the appropriate CHOKE!
Good morning from Tennessee Valley Guns. Today is February 4, 2026. Recently, a customer and I were discussing what chokes he was using when hunting. I found the conversation informative. So, I did a little hunting of my own online for additional information. Here is an overview of what I found:
• Shotguns fire multiple pellets, creating a spreading pattern that’s highly effective at close range but less precise at distance.
• Chokes control shot spread by constricting the barrel near the muzzle, keeping pellets together longer and increasing effective range.
• Common choke types:
o Cylinder: no constriction, widest pattern
o Improved Cylinder: .010" constriction
o Modified: .020" constriction
o Full: .040" constriction, tightest pattern
• More constriction = denser patterns at longer distances, increasing pellet retention on target.
• Patterning your shotgun is critical: shoot a 40"x40" target and measure pellet percentage to truly understand how a specific choke and shell perform together.
• Shot material matters: Lead, steel, bismuth, and tungsten all pattern differently—even with the same choke and shot size. Every combination must be patterned.
• Choke selection by use:
o Quail/Pheasant: Cylinder or Improved Cylinder for fast, close shots
o Ducks/Geese: Modified or Improved Modified with larger shot
o Turkey: Full or XX Full for tight, precise head shots
o Sporting Clays/Skeet: Cylinder and Improved Cylinder
o Trap: Often Full choke, especially for second shots
o Home Defense: Cylinder or Improved Cylinder for best reliability and accuracy
• Slug performance depends on choke and barrel type:
o Rifled slugs → smooth bore + cylinder choke
o Sabot slugs → rifled barrel
o Specialty rifled chokes can improve slug stability in smooth bores
Bottom line: Choke choice has the greatest impact on shotgun performance, and the only way to know what truly works is to pattern your gun with the exact ammo you plan to use.
