Coach always telling you to “Brush” Up?

Get your money back! Topspin is a product of correct mechanics that end with your contact occurring far enough in front of you that your forearm naturally rotates internally.

Sure.. there’s low to high movement from the racket head but you want to compress the ball against the strings as much as possible to create power 💥

Stop Brushing, Start Crushing 🧱

Want to get Power like the Pros?

Follow these three tips to level up your forehand and blow your opponent away.

1. Master Your Spacing - Contact needs to stay in front for maximum extension through the ball and added control. This means prepping and swinging earlier than you may think.

2. Create More Length in Your Swing - extending your take back by rotating your shoulders and off hand, will create more speed which will translate into the ball.

3. Coil from the Legs and Hips - Rotate around and down and create that force from the ground up. The Torque in your torso will send all the momentum through the ball.

Always a Hot Topic 🔥

At all levels of tennis there are pros and cons to changing direction of the rally.. but here are the Top 3 Times to Change ⬇️

1. You’re stuck in a problematic exchange - you should change direction, in order to bring the pattern of play over to your stronger side of the court. Every player has a preference of hitting their forehand or backhand and most even have a preference of playing from the deuce half or Ad half of the court. If you’re stuck in a corner that you don’t like, change direction down the line so that your opponents high % shot would be to redirect the ball to your stronger wing. Example: I prefer to dictate with my forehand from the deuce court, so I’ll take my backhand down the line to open the crosscourt lane to my opponent which brings the ball to my forehand.

2. You’re in position to attack - understanding the court geometry is key for being efficient on the court. The down the line shot reduces reaction time for your opponent because the ball has less distance to travel. So if your opponent plays a shorter ball, or slow ball that gives you time, step up the court to reduce their reaction time and pummel the ball down the line.

3. The Counter Play - immediately after your opponent changes direction, you can send the ball back down the line to limit their athleticism and test their willingness to play offensively. Low confidence players will change direction a lot in hopes of drawing errors from their opponent by turning it into a foot race, pin your opponent back in the corner they just played from and reduce their ability to move onto the ball while stifling their natural weight transfer.

Try these 3 drills to level up your serve and pronate like a pro🎯

1) Pronation Ball Throws🎾From the baseline, throw a ball over the net mimicking your serve motion, focusing on inward forearm and wrist rotation. No racket needed. Do 20-30 throws to really build the motion.

2) Service Line Smashes💥At the service line, toss high and smash straight ahead at max speed, emphasizing full pronation. Set a target to swing freely. Aim for 10-15 reps. Pro tip: Point non-dominant arm up for balance, exaggerate the follow through.

3) Ground Serves🪨From the baseline, serve downward into the ground just ahead, hitting aggressively with full pronation to “crush” it. Repeat 15-20 times.

Once you’ve repped these drills go into your normal serve routine, feel the power and pronation!

Fast Paced Return Drill 👊🏻

Try this simple return drill to increase your number of reps in a practice or warm up and help to get your eyes & reactions adjusted to the speed of the ball.

It’s a great way to rep out the body serve return while utilising quick lateral steps and hip adjustments to find your spacing & timing on fast serves 💃

Can’t seem to find rhythm on returns? 😫

Breaking serve is about applying pressure on the server over an extended period of time, and there are multiple ways to do this..

1️⃣ Understand Your Role as a Returner!

The server will always have the advantage, that’s understandable, they get to dictate how the point starts - and as a returner we have to accept this. The goal on a first serve return should be to try and get into the rally at 40-60 or 50-50, anything more is a bonus. If we can consistently do this, you will give yourself more opportunities in return games and it’ll force the server to have to take more risk which may cause their first serve % to drop. Stop trying to do too much damage and get the point started! That’s step 1.

2️⃣ Don’t Force the Return - Use it!

Playing across the body is always going to be a higher ex*****on return target, as you’re not having to change your natural swing mechanics to re-direct the ball. As you can see in this video the returner uses the pace of the serve and times the swing in its natural motion, not forcing the ball to play back against itself. You’re much more likely to commit to good racket speed and it’ll give you more safety than trying to change direction of the ball. Deuce - FH goes cross, BH goes line, AD - BH goes cross, FH goes line (reverse for lefties).

3️⃣ Use Risk & Reward in your Favor

In the biggest points (30-30 or break points) cover the highest % serving targets. Force the serve to have to take higher risk, this will lead to more opportunities at second serves in the pressure moments and if they happen to hit to where you’re covering you’ll have more time to get a good clean hit on the return. If they go for the low % serve and make it, well then you say great shot and move on. If they do it consistently then you can alter your position, left or right, even up and back to give the server a different look to think about.

Be Okay With Missing Shots 🎾💥

Even the best players in the world miss all the time. Trying to play perfect tennis out of fear of errors keeps you from attacking when you need to most and stops you from reaching your true level.

Give yourself permission to miss. This simple mindset shift lets you swing freer, play more aggressively, and take the game to your opponent without hesitation.
