Can’t seem to find rhythm on returns? 😫
Breaking serve is about applying pressure on the server over an extended period of time, and there are multiple ways to do this..
1️⃣ Understand Your Role as a Returner!
The server will always have the advantage, that’s understandable, they get to dictate how the point starts - and as a returner we have to accept this. The goal on a first serve return should be to try and get into the rally at 40-60 or 50-50, anything more is a bonus. If we can consistently do this, you will give yourself more opportunities in return games and it’ll force the server to have to take more risk which may cause their first serve % to drop. Stop trying to do too much damage and get the point started! That’s step 1.
2️⃣ Don’t Force the Return - Use it!
Playing across the body is always going to be a higher ex*****on return target, as you’re not having to change your natural swing mechanics to re-direct the ball. As you can see in this video the returner uses the pace of the serve and times the swing in its natural motion, not forcing the ball to play back against itself. You’re much more likely to commit to good racket speed and it’ll give you more safety than trying to change direction of the ball. Deuce - FH goes cross, BH goes line, AD - BH goes cross, FH goes line (reverse for lefties).
3️⃣ Use Risk & Reward in your Favor
In the biggest points (30-30 or break points) cover the highest % serving targets. Force the serve to have to take higher risk, this will lead to more opportunities at second serves in the pressure moments and if they happen to hit to where you’re covering you’ll have more time to get a good clean hit on the return. If they go for the low % serve and make it, well then you say great shot and move on. If they do it consistently then you can alter your position, left or right, even up and back to give the server a different look to think about.
