To Vitaly — The Guy Who Thinks Every sparring Round Is the Lumpinee Stadium Final
You are not “old school.”
You are the reason the beginners are hiding in the toilet when sparring starts.
The coach said light sparring.
Not “round three of a prison yard title fight.”
Everyone touched gloves. Smiled. Technical. Playful. Working timing.
And then there’s you.
Full steel box / Groin guard.
Mouthpiece like you’re about to enter a five-round war. 18 Oz gloves because "Big Gloves = Big Man"
For a Tuesday afternoon class in 34-degree heat.
Let me explain something to you, Vitaly.
If you need full battle armour for light sparring, the problem is not your partner.
It is your understanding.
You throw every jab like you’re trying to punch through a wall in Kiev.
Every low kick sounds like someone dropped a baseball bat on a frozen ham.
And then — when your partner dares to return one normal, balanced, perfectly controlled shot — you stop the round and say:
“Why you go so hard, bro? This is not fight.”
You call people “baby.”
But the 60-kg Thai fighter next to you — who has 200 fights and is sparring like he’s playing chess — has not hit anyone hard once.
Do you know why?
Because he is actually tough.
Real toughness in a Muay Thai gym in Thailand is control.
It’s balance.
It’s timing.
It’s being able to land a clean shot and choose not to.
You think pain tolerance is personality.
You think volume equals skill.
You think eating raw red meat and washing it down with diesel makes you a warrior.
But the trainers are pairing you with other beginners for a reason.
Not because you’re dangerous.
Because you’re exhausting.
And here’s the part you will never understand:
Nobody is impressed.
Not the fighters.
Not the trainers.
Not the tourists.
Not the 14-year-old who just teeped you across the ring and apologised after.
You are not in a Rocky montage.
You are in a technical session.
Take the box off.
Turn the power down.
Learn to laugh when someone sweeps you.
Touch gloves.
Play the game.
Become a student.
Because right now, Vitaly…
You are shadowboxing your own ego.
