DID YOU KNOW: When jig fisherman set the hook on a bass they most often loose the fish than catch him?....SOLUTION: When setting the hook on a jig bite, do not crack the whip on it as soon as you feel the bass has got it!!...if you want a 90 percent or greater hook set then let the bass have the jig and once he does right away load up on the reel first by reeling very fast then and only then after you load up on the reel then snap set the rod. So reel then set...reel/set, and your catch rate will soar!!.... it is cool to watch Davey Hite snap the whip but what you don't pay most often then not is how he reels first to set the point of the hook then he cracks the whip!.../P.S. Most Pro's use a 7'6 inch medium heavy with a great sensitivity rod with the fastest reel gear ration with floral carbon line, 15 to 17 pound line....G-Man

THE OTHER FORGOTTEN COLD WATER BAIT: We all know that hair jigs and jerk baits are amongst the top if not the top baits for early spring cold water conditions, but what about a lip-less crank bait? Lip-less crank you say. Yes indeed a lip-less crank bait if you will i like to coin as the all 4 season top notch bait. They are and always will be a very versatile bait in the G-Mans box always!

While the Jerkbait is a winner in clear water, a lipless crankbait can be your all around go to bait in all four seasons for most conditions once you learn to think outside the box!

The key to presentation is to keep the bait in the strike zone allot more than normal and working it at a pace that is more suited for cold water conditions. Most of your strikes will come on a lift and drop presentation - with nearly all fish hitting the bait on the descent just like fishing a Cicada or a blade bait if you will!

So get out your favorite lipless crank and your spinning rod and reels and put on a lipless crank bait of your favorite pattern that matches the hatch and work the bait on 8 to 10 pound test fluorocarbon, no matter how cold the water is!

These baits can and will work magic once you shake the chuck and wind habits we all are custom to, and learn to adapt your presentation and speed of retrieve to conditions, your catch rate will soar!!!.....give this a shot and let me know how this works out for you and always remember that the fish will always tell you what they want if you pay attention!....G-Man

TIP OF THE DAY: Ever try throwing top water baits with braided line?...Yes, top water on braided line is much easier on the wrist especially on days the arthritis is acting up, and also snapping the line and walking the dog is much more effortless with braided line when walking the dog and can cast a country mile as well as any other line....try using some suffix 832 30 pound braid and let me know how you did, thanks G-Man.

Tip of the day: 0ne in 25 million bass born get to live in to the double digits, 99.9 percent of bass get eaten before there first year in the first 6 to 8 weeks of life. When a bass reaches 17 inches is when he can eat a 10 inch bass and his life changes when they also hit 17 inches around 3 1/2 pounds there chances at hitting double digits increases drastically, there for when you catch a bass at 3 1/2 pounds around 17 inches they must be thrown back, they are no longer on the food chain for the rest of the predator fish and will get in to the double digits providing ample food supply and less smaller fish under 17 inches to compete with, it is these bass under 17 that get eaten and should be taken out to insure the prosperity of double digit fish within the waters there in....G-Man

One side of my boat has three rods rigged and three on the other, come time to start fishing, tournament or not i have 6 baits tied on, general rule of thumb, three different presentations to find and locate bass, one is top, one is horizontal and the third is vertical, so on the three rods on the one side of the boat has three of the easy baits or locator baits if you will covering the three presentations, vertical, horizontal the easy bait side is one top water, a spook, two, a spinner bait, and three is a lipless crank, and on the other side of the boat is three more rods same deal just all three rods are rigged with plastic worms only....one is a drop shot rig, two is a floating worm rig and three is a split shot or Carolina rig, I promise you will locate fish most often with the worm of the three ways to rig it, but start with the easy baits first, the spinner, the top water and the lippless crank, then when on the fish revise it to meet what the fish want and to fish the spot on the spot and nail the sweet spot baby!!...Good luck, G-Man.

Power Shotting:

Think drop shotting isn't for bait casters with braided line?...Think again, next time your out on a blue sky sunny day and bass seem to be deep, then get out your favorite rig for flipping and pitching the thick stuff, and time for power Shotting, that's right power shotting...drop shotting on steroids. big gear, heavy line, un traditional drop shotting on the juice!...Take a 3/0 wide gap hook, tie it on like a regular drop shot hook with the pollimar knot with the tag end ran back threw with a 3/8 ounce drop shot weight or swivel sinker like normal, then rig up a 5 inch all the way up to a 11.5 inch Yum plastic worm or your big plastic bait of choice, then hook it on the 3/0 worm hook on your drop shot rig weedless then run it threw the nasty stuff on the bottom, it will go threw it all and cover lots of bottom and bass will rip you up!...don't be surprised if you go home with triple digits at the end of the day in catches...see how this works for you and let me know...G-Man.
