On Tuesday, I got a call for Search and Rescue assistance in the Bear Trap Canyon on the Madison River.

The initial call was for a man that had fallen off a cliff and was seriously hurt. Turns out a one legged man had rode his bike into the wilderness to go horn hunting. His group left him early in the am, when he attempted to hike up the side of the mountain he fell on a small cliff and rock section, injuring his back and ankle.

Turns out he had been hurt for hours and a few passing by college kids heard him yelling on the side of the mountain and found him hurt and needing rescue. Those kids hiked up to the top of the ridge to call 911. They most definitely helped save this guy's life. He wouldn't have made it through the night is my guess.

We hiked the trail about 3 miles with an EMT and a Forest Service LEO. We where packing a backboard and hypothermia kit. Once we reached the injured hiker we started first aid and the initial move onto the backboard and eventually onto a rescue sled called a SKED.

It was determined that we could not move the injured hiker down the slope to a flat spot for a heli transport. It was not safe for us to hike down the slope with the injured person. So a Short Haul helicopter team was called into make the lift out of the canyon.

In these short video clips you can see the short haul team get dropped off and then picked up with the injured hiker and flown to a nearby air ambulance waiting at the trailhead.

Thanks to everyone involved and for working together to make this SAR mission safe and successful.
