Life gets loud.
Work. Deadlines. Bills. Politics. Drama. Phones. Emails. Bu****it.

Then you descend.

And for a little while, none of it matters.

Nobody underwater cares what you do for a living, what you drive, how many emails you haven’t answered, or whatever disaster is currently unfolding in the group chat.

You breathe. Look around. Laugh with your buddies… and remember that life is actually supposed to be fun.

Sure, the reefs, wrecks and sharks are incredible. But the real gift might be getting a couple hours where the rest of the world simply can’t reach you.

Go somewhere your phone can’t follow.
Learn to dive. Find some adventure. Have some damn fun. 🤿🌊

…The bu****it will still be there when you surface.

Congratulations, Patti!

Watching you grow as a diver has been one of my greatest privileges—as both your husband and your instructor. Your determination, confidence, and hard work made this possible. I’m incredibly proud of you. Selfishly - we can basically go vacation and dive wherever the hell we want! I remember when Chris McKenna first certified you almost 10 years ago. We’ve been diving ever since.

Scuba diving is equipment-intensive… because every piece of gear is life support equipment.

That’s why I put my students in top-of-the-line equipment and teach them to know it inside and out.

Before every dive, we do a Touch Drill—physically touching and function-checking every piece of gear. Pilots use checklists even though they know their aircraft. Divers should be no different.

Nothing ruins a dive faster than discovering you packed two left booties, one fin, or forgot spare O-rings… after the boat leaves the dock. 😂

People always ask me what gear to buy. My answer never changes:

The 3 E’s of Scuba:
📘 Education
🌊 Experience
⚙️ Equipment

…in that order.

You don’t know what you need until you’ve earned the first two. Then buy quality, buy it once, and enjoy it for years.

But here’s the part I care about most…

NAUI teaches that divers should never become dependent on their equipment for survival.

Gear can fail. You can’t.

That’s why we drill personal dive skills, self-rescue, and buddy rescue until they become second nature. Equipment makes diving possible. Training is what brings you home.

As NAUI says:
“Dive Safety Through Education.”

And remember…

Working with Force Blue, my brother RJ, and his incredible kids—now officially NAUI Open Water/Nitrox and NAUI Advanced Open Water/Nitrox certified divers—on a beautiful night dive at Boynton Ledges was something I’ll never forget.

A huge thank you to South Florida Diving Headquarters and our rockstar boat captain, Kristen, for making the experience possible.

Giving someone the gift of scuba diving and introducing them to the underwater world is one of the greatest privileges an instructor can have.

Over the course of this program, these divers completed:

* 6 hours of classroom academics
* 6 hours of confined water (pool) training
* Four full days of open water diving

Along the way they developed not just diving skills, but confidence, judgment, and teamwork. They tackled:

* Self-rescue and buddy rescue
* Underwater navigation
* Deep diving
* Night diving
* Wreck diving on the M/V Castor
* Multiple reef dives
* Light salvage and recovery, including raising a 30-pound object with a 60-pound lift bag

None of it was handed to them.

They earned every certification by pushing beyond their comfort zones, supporting one another, and refusing to quit. When you’re cold, wet, tired, hungry, and still smiling—that’s when character shows. Skill matters, but attitude is what carries a team through.

Watching these three grow over the week was incredibly rewarding, and I’m proud of every one of them.

Thank you to Force Blue and to RJ for trusting me with your family. It was an honor to help introduce them to a world that has given me so much.

Congratulations, divers. Welcome to the underwater community. The real adventure is just beginning. 🌊🤿

The gold card lives in “The Leatherneck” by Proof — Marine-owned, veteran-run, and built like it plans to survive some bad decisions.

Military heritage meets military heritage. An Eagle Rare Bourbon and classic 1911 were not pictured.

Tastes refine with time. I figure at 42 - get something refined dude. Velcro isn’t a thing.

There is no Trimix 1.5 but that’s definitely what it was. The Trimix 2 course will get us to 330’ in training and then it’s off to the races after that. Multi-mission, multi-environment capable divers. Helium is just a tool, but a very useful tool for deeper diving. Had a hell of a blast the last 4 days. Thanks to Terrence Tysall, Dave Ochs and my buddy Stephen - as well as the respective crews of Walker’s Dive Charters and South Florida Diving Headquarters for the professional support divers and spot-on Captains and crew that helped make this course happen. I didn’t hit 200’ (197’ was my max) but yup… I’m that guy who put his computer in the damn sand to get it… I’ll admit it, haha. Great wrecks all.

Riviera Beach - The Ande Wreck. Max Depth 197’. Gases 18/45 Trimix, Nitrox 37’ and O2. Having a blast, man. Seas were a dodgy 6’-8’ with the occasional 10’ - just rollers, man. Big thanks to hurricane ass-wound or whatever it’s called. Good times. The amazingly experienced crew of made this possible—along with some solid technical training by Terrence Tysall.
