This infant raccoon was moved by a well-intentioned finder, after it was found in a tree within their yard. Worried about their dog attacking the baby, the kit was moved to a tree outside the fence. After a day or so, it became clear that the kit was in need of professional care, presenting with dehydration and lethargy.
Lucky for this baby, he was transferred to Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary yesterday in order to grow up with one of their similarly aged kits as we do not have others this young in care.
PLEASE do not move healthy wild babies. Mothers truly know best. They choose the best locations to raise and keep their babies, even if that location does not seem ideal to you. This might be up against your house, in a culvert along a roadway, or in your dog's yard. These areas are often safest from their native predators.
Although mothers of most species will try to find a missing baby, they are often unable to, especially if the baby was moved far away. If you have dogs or outdoor cats and find babies in your yard, please consider leashing your pets when outdoors.
Baby season is still going strong, and we ask that you call a licensed professional before intervening in any wildlife related situation!
