UKS Karate

UKS Karate United Karate System is guided by a series of principles.

Karate ought to be affordable, instruction among black belts should be free and freely given, aids should be shared at cost, and people are the most important concern, not punches, kicks, or money

Let’s “Pack-A-Pickup” on Friday June 26, 2026!
If you had the pleasure of attending a class, seminar, tournament or working with Bob, you will know that he could encourage lots of people to join together and make things happen. Having a positive impact in his community was always a goal he strived towards! We are wanting to continue with those efforts just like he taught us to do, so Randy Hann (5th Dan UKS) has arranged all the transportation to take a pickup truck of goods to the Pemberville Food Pantry to be donated in Bob’s name. The pickup will be present at the visitation and funeral this Friday at Marsh & Marsteller funeral home in Pemberville, OH. All that’s left to do now is fill the truck as we gather to celebrate Bob’s life and legacy!
The pantry accepts: Paper goods, diapers and wipes, shelf stable foods, venison, frozen foods, farm fresh eggs and personal hygiene products. They also happily accept monetary donations; payable to “Pemberville Food Pantry”.

It is with a profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our founding instructor, mentor, and friend, Robert "Bob" D. Nicholson, who passed away on Friday evening.

Bob was, by all accounts, a legend and a leader. Alongside his beloved wife, Mary Anne, Bob didn't just spearhead a martial arts program—he built the United Karate System into the family it is today. He created a community where individuals gathered not only to share knowledge and train, but to build deep, lifelong friendships. (In fact, his legacy is so profound that some of our students literally exist because their parents met through his classes!)

While he possessed an unmatched tenacity for learning and teaching, Bob will also be remembered for his devotion to his family, his incredible gift for storytelling, and his unforgettable streak as a bit of a prankster.

To look at Bob’s life is to see a masterclass in dedication to the martial arts:

The Early Years: Bob began his karate journey in January of 1969 under Jack Coleman, earning a 1st-degree black belt in Japanese Goju. In 1972, he earned a 1st-degree Chung Do Kwan black belt under Anne Small.

System Leadership: He studied the American Karate System under Ernest Lieb and rose to the rank of 6th-degree black belt. He was the proud co-founder and chief instructor of the United Karate System.

Community & Education: Bob impacted thousands of lives across the region. He was the past chief instructor of the BGSU Continuing Education Karate Classes, and taught karate throughout Toledo, Monroe, Fremont, and at the University of Toledo.

Service: He dedicated his time to teaching self-defense to law enforcement officers and served as the first Ohio State Men’s AAU Karate Chairperson.

The world lost an truly incredible man, and the void he leaves behind is unquantifiable. Teacher, mentor, storyteller, leader—if you knew Bob, you have a story or two to share and memories to cherish forever.

Please keep Mary Anne and the entire Nicholson family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate life without Bob by their side.

To our UKS family, BGSU alumni, and friends: We invite you to fill the comments below with your favorite memories, stories, and photos of Bob. Let’s celebrate the incredible legacy of the man who gave us so much.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Nicholson. You will be deeply missed, but your legacy lives on in every single one of us.
