Fifteen years ago (plus a couple days), the BGSU rugby team won two of its biggest and important rugby matches of its history. Two weeks before, the team edged the University of Minnesota in a hard fought 33-26 victory to win the Midwest Championship. The team was then slated to host the National Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight matches of the National Championship at BGSU's Mickey Cochrane Soccer Field two weeks later. On Saturday BGSU easily disposed of Temple University 62-5. That brought up a match with the University of Florida on Sunday which BG won on a dramatic last minute penalty kick by Nick Viviani for a 21-18 victory. Viv would finish that day with eleven of BG's 21 points. He would finish the season with 93 points after having 162 the fall before. Ironically the victories were buried in the noise generated by Seal Team Six who had killed Osama Bin Ladin at about the same time that the BG / Florida game was being played.

Two weeks ago the city of Lima installed Mike Bendele and BGSU rugby alum Joe Bonifas’s metal flame sculpture in Lima’s Veteran’s Memorial Park.

When the RMS Titanic slipped beneath the waves at @2:30am on April 15, 1912, among the 1500 she took to the bottom were the 15 members of the ship’s rugby team. The RMS Titanic RFC were composed of the primarily Welsh coal stokers that had signed on in Belfast to work on the ship’s rugby team. After playing a match against an English pub team in Southampton, club’s next game was to be against the New York Athletic Club prior to the ship’s return voyage to England.
