World class granite mountains rise directly from the favelas (slums) of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 2010, Asa Firestone and Andrew Lenz created the CEU program. They received funding from Kiehl's in association with National Geographic as well as a grant from the American Alpine Club. They ran a crowd funding campaign and raised $16,000 to launch BEYONDgear and build a climbing wall for CEU. This climbing wall is now being constructed in a government run sports complex for the Rocinha Favela community. Out of the CEU program, BEYONDgear was born, in an effort to use social enterprise to create a movement supporting adventure for good. Visit us at gobeyondgear.com

In 2010, C.E.U. Centro de Escalada Urbana was founded with the effort to provide a safe space for kids from the favelas (slums) of Rio de Janeiro to learn to climb. Andrew Lenz has propelled this program to new heights and last year he and the CEU community finally built their non-profit climbing gym in the Rocinha Favela. The Centro de Escalada Urbana (CEU) is a non-profit organization that works to introduce youth from the Favelas (slums) of Rio de Janeiro to rock climbing. Many of the favelas in Rio are home to towering rock monoliths that are now a resource, a way in which the youth can in every way expand their horizons. Dominic Gill founder of Encompass Films and Asa Firestone, founder of BEYONDgear went to Brazil a year back to create this piece. They recently returned with Nadia Boctor to produce a 30 minute documentary coming out this October. Stay tuned!
