I’m extremely thankful that Venessa Fraser(), a runner from the Bowerman Track Club(), took some time to answer some questions about her life as a pro runner. Here’s how that conversation went:
————————————————
Why did you start running?
I started running in 3rd grade with Girls on the Run. I truly fell in love with of running and the process of trying to get better every day.
————————————————
What’s your favorite nonrunning sport to play?
Skiing! (but I can’t do that as long as I am a competitive runner due to injury risk.) I enjoy playing tennis and golf once in a while just for fun.
————————————————
What are some challenges you have had to face in your running career, and how did you deal with them?
Injuries are probably the hardest part of the sport. I have been pretty healthy in my career but have definitely had some setbacks; I’ve just tried to remind myself to remain positive and patient.
————————————————
What’s the most memorable race you have ever been a part of?
I was a part of Shelby Houlihan’s outdoor American Record 5K (14:34) race in Heusden, Belgium. It was my first summer racing in Europe straight out of college and it was so exciting just to be in that race. I also ran a 5K personal best at the time (15:09).
————————————————
What’s your go-to race day breakfast?
Bagel w/ cream cheese and scrambled eggs.
————————————————
What are you doing to stay fit physically and mentally during this time?
I am lucky that I have a home gym and live in a place where I can safely still do all my running outside. I am watching shows and playing games with my roommates, and am also talking to lots of family and friends virtually.. trying to enjoy the little things as much as possible.

Any advice you want to give young runners?
Have fun with it! Don’t put pressure on yourself, but at the same time it’s important to come up with big goals that you are excited to pursue. Be careful not to overwork or over train - healthy and consistent training is much more effective if you want to have long term success. ————————————————
