Urbanity Dance

Urbanity Dance A non-profit organization with School, Community, and Company programming.

Urbanity Dance incorporated into a non-profit in 2011 with a mission to inspire, engage, and empower individuals and communities through the art of dance and movement. Urbanity’s mission and objectives are fulfilled by its organizational pillars of Company, School, and Community. Urbanity’s Professional Company pushes the limits of contemporary dance, inspiring audiences with cutting-edge artistry

and startling unpredictability. The Company is dedicated to providing visually arresting and musically stimulating performances for audiences across the country. The Company was voted Boston’s Best by Improper Bostonian in 2013, announced Best of Boston by Boston Magazine in 2015, and named a Top Ten Critics’ Pick by The Boston Globe. The School at Urbanity officially opened in Fall of 2011 at Urbanity’s first studio on Shawmut Avenue in Boston’s South End with a class of 85 students. Driven by the demand for high quality dance training for movers of all ages and abilities, the School now serves over 500 youth and adult students through 90 weekly classes in its three South End studios. Urbanity’s faculty, all from diverse cultural and dance backgrounds, encourage generations of lifelong movers and dance enthusiasts through Urbanity’s commitment to technique, rigor, and fun. Urbanity’s Community programming spans a range of partnerships with community collaborators through its three flagship programs: “Urbanity in the Community,” which provides dance curriculum to Boston Public School students who receive little to no in-school arts instruction (est. 2012); “Dance with Parkinson’s” which uses movement to improve the quality of life of those living with Parkinson’s Disease (est. 2013); and “Movement Mends” which uses dance to empower those who have experienced incarceration, homelessness, or violence (est. 2013).

Meet Brittani. Two years ago, a close friend invited her to try one adult hip hop class together, and she hasn't looked back since. Today, Brittani is a work-study student who admins a youth Hip Hop class right before stepping into her own adult class as a dancer.
Brittani's story is what Move What Matters is all about. Just 5 days left until our June 30 deadline. Help us reach $75,000 so every adult who steps across our door finds what Brittani found.

Rachel first walked into Urbanity as a teenager. Years later, she came back as an intern, then as an educator, and now as a resident artist with Urbanity X.

Rachel's story is what Move What Matters is all about. Help us reach $75,000 by June 30 so artists like Rachel have a long-term home to build bold, ambitious work like "Looking Back, Stepping Forward," an evening-length collaboration with Ezekiel's Wheels Klezmer Band that weaves Yiddish folk dance into contemporary practice.

Meet Eyleen and Eyce 💛 What started as one-on-one time between mother and son during Baby +1 has grown into something bigger: a community where families from all different backgrounds come together, and a chance for Eyce to grow up surrounded by openness, comfort, and connection.
Eyleen and Eyce's story is what Move What Matters is all about. Help us raise $75,000 by June 30 so the next family finds what they've found.

Announcing the 2026 recipients of Urbanity X, our annual residency program supporting emerging Boston movement artists.

This year marks an exciting first for the program: Urbanity X is now offered across two distinct tracks. The Dancemaker track supports choreographers advancing their artistic practice, while the new Community track supports artists whose work directly benefits the Boston dance community. Each resident receives a $1,000 stipend, 40 hours of studio space, the opportunity to share their work publicly, and more.

Meet our partners at Pine Street Inn. Through Urbanity's Movement Meets program, dance shows up exactly where it's needed most: in shelters, where joy and creativity aren't extras, but essential. For an hour, the room lifts, and so does everyone in it.

This partnership is what Move What Matters is all about. Help us raise $75,000 by June 30 so programs like Movement Meets keep showing up where they're needed most.

She rediscovered the love she thought she'd lost, and discovered something new about herself as an artist at Urbanity. At 15, she started her own dance company.

Sage's story is what Move What Matters is all about. Today we're launching our campaign to raise $75,000 by June 30, so the next dancer who walks through our doors finds what Sage found.

We’re excited to announce we are one of 157 nonprofits who received a grant this spring from Cambridge Community Foundation. This funding will help us continue our Dance with Parkinson's program at Youville Assisted Living Residences.

Learn more about CCF’s annual Community Fund grants at cambridgecf.org/community-fund-2026

CCF's annual Community Fund is our broadest investment in Cambridge nonprofits, and our widest lens on the city. This spring, 157 organizations received a total of $1.37 million across child and youth development, arts and culture, education, housing, food security, health and wellbeing, economic security, community building, and the environment. That breadth is how we track what's changing in Cambridge and where the need is growing.

It's also a shared investment. Donor-advised fund holders and other local funders expanded what was possible this year by co-investing alongside CCF and contributing 46 percent of this year’s funding pool, allowing us to reach organizations we otherwise couldn't. We're grateful for every person who chose to be part of that.

We built renewal grants and consolidated the Community Fund into one cycle because we wanted the process to embody the values we hold around trust-based philanthropy. Trust runs through every part of this program. Reviewers give their time and knowledge. Nonprofits open their work to outside assessment. Donors invest without directing the outcome. We try to honor all of it—in how we design the application to minimize administrative burden, how we give feedback to applicants, and how we stay present as partners throughout the year.

Congratulations to this year's grantees and thank you to everyone who made this cycle possible. Learn more about our FY26 Community Fund partners in our press release: https://cambridgecf.org/community-fund-2026
