What makes Aikido stand out is that we use real attacks, not pulled punches, and we also are preparing for attacks from multiple attackers. The self-defense method of Aikido is contrary to most of what you have learned thus far, because it is amazingly powerful although not using physical strength. This is great for those who are expecting their attacker to have more physical strength than themsel
ves. Although Aikido is complex enough to keep one's interest for many years, there are also a good deal of principals and self-defense movements that one can learn on his or her very first day as well. To achieve a black belt in Aikido would be similar to enrolling in Harvard and receiving a degree or even an advanced degree! Technically, Aikido is developed based on the weapons technique of the Samurai. Because you will probably not be attacked with a sword today, we use weapons only about 20% of the time, instead using "empty hand" Aikido does use the Tanto or knife, a wooden replica, in our practice, which is useful. Because of the way Aikido functions, being created by people who were mainly smallish and petit, smaller people have an advantage in Aikido. Therefore, women can achieve just as much as men, which is a rarity in martial arts. Our founder is Shuji Maruyama, who is in Japan still actively developing this style of Aikido. Using Ki Principles is very important in this style of Aikido. We practice Ki Development on a daily basis. Because other forms of Aikido followed the Traditional Aikido lineage, Kokikai Aikido is on a separate path. We tend to focus mainly on the teachings of our founder, who holds regular seminar in the United States right now. I hope that you can try Kokikai Aikido, because this could be a major and positive change in your life. Sincerely,
Heather Randolph, Sensei
